A timely excerpt from Read This When Things Fall Apart: Letters to Activists in Crisis, written by my friend Aaron Goggans, who has supported many frontline activists struggling with their mental health during moments of mass protest and upheaval. Thank you, @pempem.bsky.social for uplifting.

Black stories are unfairly targeted in recent book bans. In the last six years, the book banning movement has increased significantly.

A substantial amount of the ire is directed at Black authors and works highlighting Black stories.
Book Bannings Targeting Black Authors and Perspectives Are Skyrocketing
Books by Black authors are being disproportionately banned at an alarming rate.

Hands off Haiti, and no more imperial interventions. The “chaos” cited as the reason for intervention is directly related to the coup d’état organized by Canada, France and the US.

“Blouin’s very birth troubled a colonial order erected on a strict racial hierarchy. She would make sure that her life would be far more of a problem for it.”

Trump and accused war criminal Netanyahu unveiled a proposal that includes the creation of a “Board of Peace,” which will govern Gaza headed by Trump. Netanyahu threatened to “finish the job” if Hamas rejected the plan, which, at the time, Hamas said it had not even seen.

We live in a society and a world in which structural and state violence are permissible: Harm is penalized only when it is committed by the powerless, and the mass organized looting and brutality committed by private companies, powerful individuals and the state, is protected and sanctioned.

Just a reminder that only 14 of the 94 Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action have been implemented in Canada. The history of settler colonialism in Canada is uninterrupted, violent, ongoing.

This is not a conversation about residential schools. it is a conversation about history, about who gets to tell the authoritative stories and whose stories are extra reading.

It’s terrifying what we are witnessing in El Fashir. The UAE backed RSF encircling the city to starve and exterminate people, while the so-called intl. community treats the UAE as a peace broker.

My students were very happy to spend time with assata shakur’s words today and to engage her reflections on prison, slavery, and exile. Her works were already in the curriculum but we spent additional time today to honour her passing.

Save 30% on #NewBook "Policing Black Lives," by Robyn Maynard @policingblack.bsky.social, which documents how a half a century of police reforms in Canada have expanded the scope and scale of policing and perpetuated anti-Black violence. #BlackStudies buff.ly/zsCOj1C
Cover of Policing Black Lives by Robyn Maynard. The background features a grainy, black-and-white image of a Black individual facing a wall. The person's posture and the ruler markings adjacent to the figure suggest that the image is a mugshot. The entire cover has a gritty feel and is overlaid with a grainy, stippled texture. The title text is bold and distressed.
