yeah you're basically spot on. cooking is succeeding, being cooked is being doomed, knowing that you're messing up / about to mess up, knowing bad things are about to happen to you (dad's gonna find out i smashed his vase - i'm cooked") (i've only got 2 days till my deadline - i'm cooked")

cooking = doing a good job, having a good idea etc (implies a practical success - you've done a good thing)
eating = being sharply dressed, speaking profoundly (implies a more passive success - you've come across well)
however the 2 are roughly interchangeable, hence the phrase "you cooked and ate"
