I can speak only for North America, but it’s hard to convey to those who weren’t there how much this perception fueled the wider audience’s reluctance to buy Mega Man games. Most sales during that period came almost entirely from fans.

If you weren’t around in the late ’90s and mid-2000s, you might not know that Mega Man was a frequent target of criticism in the English-language gaming press. The series was often cast in a negative light for releasing so many sequels. A 2002 Mega Man Outpost post captures how we felt at the time
