Sculpt of @crispyporkboi.bsky.social 's character from a few years back I still like a lot, I was learning real time VFX at the time so I made a bunch of magic effects in UE5

last night somebody reminded me of a time many years ago when I got some game narrative insight from somebody at Valve, so I have now published it in a blog post

This is really cool (and great advice)!

This is bringing me back to being a kid making CS maps, and being kind of clueless and just thinking it was fun to litter the levels with stuff. That email from David pinpoints quite elegantly *why* that stuff works and elevates a level.

Windows 10 End of Life is in less than 2 weeks!
But you don't have to upgrade to Windows 11!!

This video will show you how to extend the life of Windows 10 by 3 more years via Extended Security Updates program safely, for free.

MS throws you to the wolves, but the wolves will throw you a bone.

Also as an aside: I feel like great riggers and great 3d-pipeline-plugin-scripters are a rarity.

Seems like big studios depend on Maya plugins that they have been using for 20 years and if the expert who wrote them left there would be chaos. There need to be more of that guy.

If this sounds interesting, crawl job postings at studios for tech art roles and see what they're looking for. (Also disclaimer that "tech art" doesn't mean the same thing everywhere, terminology will vary).
protowlf.bsky.social
My experience is with the game industry, where skills and portfolio are what get you a job moreso than degrees. My impression is that the CG industry is similar, but I can't say for sure.

CG studios definitely have hard programmer roles too, but I assume there are tech artists roles as well.

Tech art is a vague category but it can include things like rigging, shader/material creation, making maya plugins, managing lots of assets and the workflow of assets for teams, making tools to help with workflow. Basically the places where technical problems intersect with creative work.
protowlf.bsky.social
But I'm guessing you want to leverage your art skills and existing degree.

In the game industry (and I assume cg as well) roles that fall under "tech art" are generally not going to require a degree, but instead require specialized technical skills. That probably makes sense for you I'm guessing

It helps to have an objective, example job positions you want to apply for. If it's just any kind of programming gig, I guess the path to that is getting another degree and going to job fairs, but that's a lot of time and money. There are non-degree training programs for things like web dev too?

Thanks! I don't think I've ever seen it positioned that way, but the results are really good.

I used to use mine above the monitor at a 45 angle, but it was way less accurate. I guess being closer makes a huge difference.

Kinda off topic, but what is your hand tracking setup? I'm impressed by how stable it is through this whole run.

HUHH what do you want me to do with this???

The plan was *always* to capture the market, then turn the screws until everyone was paying the same prices they were before, except to Microsoft instead of devs.

The fact that they're turning these screws so quickly is a sign that the plan is failing. 😌

If this post is how you find out Gamepass is a Bad Thing actually, sorry to rip the bandaid off. Microsoft didn't start making games free because they're you're friend.

Gamepass succeeding would have put the whole market in their walled-garden, with Microsoft deciding who is allowed to make games.
