More evidence of my Melungeon heritage! What's interesting is they said I have traces of both Northeastern NA and Southwestern NA DNA markers. This indicates that some of my Native American ancestors belonged to the same Haplogroup as Peruvian NA, but instead migrated to the Eastern USA!

It's honestly the height of my 25th birthday thus far, and I'm happy to have done this research. As someone who was going to college to be a history major then switched to culinary school, researching history and my family's place in it has always enthralled me as much as cooking!

After I found these connections I joined the M*HA and now I'm a member! Honestly this is the connections in my research I've been waiting for since I was 16!

I have genetic connections to African Americans from Virginia and Southern Ohio which is from the Gibson and Chavis side of my Dad's family.

I reached out to the M*HA (M*elungeon Heritage Association). They gave me resources to help aid me in my research.

Through DNA testing and family tree research I discovered she had ancestors from Europe, Nigeria, Angola, the Congo, and Indigenous Americans of the Kusha Choctaw of Mississippi and the Alonquin- Powhatan people of Virginia.

My Dad is of Melungeon descent on his paternal grandmother side of the family (my paternal great grandmother). She was of Melungeon descent.

The Melungeons are an Appalachian minority group that are of European, Sub-Saharan African, and Indigenous American descent.

Yesterday I took a big step in my life that I wouldn't have expected in 25 years of existence.

I've been researching my family heritage since I was 16 and 9 years later after years of reading documents, online research, and genetic testing I made a HUGE discovery about my Dad.

So in reference the term 'Melungeon" was once a slur used in the South to describe Triracial individuals who lived in isolated communities in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas. I found out I have ancestors who were members of the Gibson family of Virginia.
