Also, to the bit about imagining the perspective of a character, I 100% feel that! It's partly why I have like a billion ocs (whom I gotta draw more) for a billion different things, since they fit a particular thought or vibe that I *don't* fit. Same goes for different forms and stuff!

The other folks who've commented have made most of the points I'd say, but I do see your perspective, too. For me, Harper started out as basically a self-insert that over time grew into a whole thing of its own, and nowadays I think mascot is a great word I hadn't considered to describe her with.
