I’ve tried. The rental stock here is just not great, and it ends up being quite expensive for trips where I plan to stay somewhere for a week or more.
It really sucks that I have to make every single day of my driving life worse to be able to road trip with my kids and dog a few times a year. I’d love it if I could rent a minivan on demand for the odd road trip or camping excursion and just have a practical sedan for the other 96% of drives.
Once upon a time Nazis also occupied this cultural space, but now they’re just smol bean little guys suffering economic anxiety.
“Do you feel there is some inherent aspect of my ‘Easterling’ nature that predisposes me to worship those ‘with a mind for metal and wheels’ that the proud men of the West do not?”
I think I’d have probably been more persuasive visiting him as a 12 year old boy, book in hand, earnestly inquiring “Sir. . . Why did you make this choice here?”
Reading LotR as a 12 year old Indian immigrant, fall in love with the world, get to RotK: ”Horrible, cruel men with dark faces.“ They ride ‘oliphants.’ 🤨

Still love the series, even the Haradrim as a look. But if I had a Time Machine I’d definitely be paying a visit to have a sit down with him.
But for chaotic situations like now you need generically smart generalists and you can’t actually print those off a template, you need to train intellectual curiosity and teach those with it to focus it productively. That’s what the humanities do.
All that came from a liberal arts education with a solid foundation in the humanities. Objective focused education is fine for mature labor markets where the relationship between aptitudes and tasks are well understood.
Hey I also owe my career path to making excel “get up and dance.” But nobody taught me this, it came from strong intuitions about how to tell stories, how to leverage data to enrich those stories, and how to make things nice to look at.
I was very surprised when I first read wealth of nations and realized the Chamber of Commerce people had lied to me and that he was actually not a moron.
Most Indian cultures are actually more granular about titles. It’s just that the titles don’t map across cultures! In South India your paternal cousins are not distinguished from direct siblings but maternal cousins are! A generic concept of “aunt” isn’t a cultural universal.
So they’re replacing the millennial lifestyle subsidy with digital leaded gasoline. We definitely got the better end of the deal.
Just talked to my mom who told me to talk her friend who is starting a new tech venture. I fully expected an AI scam, but the pitch was a crypto scam instead! I was relieved! Wasting GPU compute to enable money laundering somehow feels quaint compared to where these chatbots will take us.
Among the best bits of parenting advice I got while expecting my first was a throw-away joke on a podcast with @hotdogsladies.bsky.social where he said “Did you know your kids are little versions of themselves, not little versions of you?” I’ve kept reflecting on that throughout this dad journey.
Being on social media too much has devastated my reading comprehension skills
Progressives need to work it out, because a lot of progressive priorities, like forgiving student debt and monetary policy aimed at full employment are inherently inflationary. So if we don’t have a way to sell .5% higher baseline inflation as good actually, we’re cooked.
People also don’t think ”I, as a person, have less value because the eggs cost more.”
And people CAN work that way if it’s messaged. The Free Silver progressives explicitly linked inflation being needed to help out farmers who went into debt to capitalize their farms and people got it.
Whether they say it or not, it’s literally how math works.
Did she just bring an easel and chart with her on first dates?
If you’re a net debtor—as long as your wages keep up—inflation actually makes you more wealthy in real terms. If anything, people saddled with mortgages or student loans dragging them down should be happy about inflation devaluing how much their debt is worth.
Most of those other tendencies just got absorbed as streams of thought under liberal welfare capitalism though? They’re tributaries into the neoliberal economic order rather than the Communist one.
His introduction to punditry when he first started 538 involved a public spat with @pkrugman.bsky.social about economics where Silver got schooled. I wish I could find the original back and forth.
Not unprecedented. Woodrow Wilson’s wife ran the show for a while when he was basically catatonic. Happened with Reagan too later in his last term I think.
Also I’m not a teacher and know very little about pedagogy but I’m pretty sure “You didn’t EARN your snacks because you were BAD” is going to be effectively solely at teaching kids how to band together to work the system.
An anti-pattern is a riff on that and is meant to refer to approaches that aren’t like that. Undocumented, idiosyncratic, can’t be applied to other cases, etc. where different groups don’t mesh their work well.

They’re using it wrong, but it’s a common misuse where “anti-pattern” means “NO! BAD!”
