I read Play Nice by Rachel Harrison and I loved it so much! It may be my favorite one by her. She writes female relationships so well, it has haunted houses, ghosts, twisted mother daughter and sister relationships. Plus the cover!💗💜 Highly recommend! 🩸📚 #booksky @rachelharrison.bsky.social

I read Why I love Horror: Essays on Horror Literature. Becky Spratford edited essays from different horror authors each giving an essay on why they love and write horror. Each essay is incredible and Becky's work in the horror world is essential. Highly recommend! 💙📚 #booksky @raforall.bsky.social

I finished a book for book club yesterday which is different for me. The Summer Book by Tove Jansson. Translated from Finnish it was written in 1972 about Sophie who is six and her grandmother having adventures on an island the summer after Sophie's mother dies. Nostalgic, sad, charming. #booksky💙📚

Yesterday I finished a charming nonfiction book: Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton. This is about a woman in the English countryside who finds a baby hare, takes it home to raise it and her reflections on nature and the hare. It is pastoral, poetic language and I highly recommend this one. 💡📚 #booksky

So I've read a few books lately that I didn't love, normally I DNF them but these two I finished. And to be honest I can't decide if I should review them or keep it positive reviews only? Thoughts? Also, here are my cats to make up for the lack of posting. They are sisters and littermates.

I read Thirteen Storeys by Jonathan Sims. An interesting take on a haunted apartment complex. 13 people being haunted, each chapter is their story until we reach the finale when they all come together. Ghosts, locked room murder, the building is a character too. I recommend! #booksky 💙📚🩸📚

I read this one on audiobook, Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand. A British folk band in the 70's rents a gothic manor house in the countryside to record their sophomore album. Years later they are interviewed about what happened that summer, who was that girl? This one was fun! 💙📚 #booksky 🩸📚

Yesterday I finished Overgrowth by Mira Grant. Overgrowth is an alien invasion story from the perspective of the alien, a character study on human behavior. This was fun, not as scary as her book Into the Drowning Deep (mermaid horror) but I really liked the aliens and I recommend it. 💙📚🩸📚 #booksky

I just finished Hungerstone by Kat Dunn and I think I finally bucked my reading slump. This is a retelling of Carmilla, gothic, sapphic vampires, female rage, revenge. It is a bit of a slow burn but I promise it is worth it! I highly recommend this one.

I finished The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. This was an excellent gothic horror book! Set in the 17th century with duel timelines. Elsie is confined to a crumbling gothic manor after her husband dies. She is determined to make the best of it...but the sounds come at night. #booksky💙📚 🩸📚.

Hey all, last night I finished Feeders by Matt Serafini. This book is social media horror. It features Kylie who gets a secret app Monolife on her phone. To stay popular on this app she does bloodthirsty things. But who is feeding on who? Why do monsters keep showing up in her room? #booksky📚💙🩸📚

Yesterday I finished an excellent non fiction book called High Risers by Ben Austen about the history of Cabrini Green, a public housing project on the North side of Chicago. Austen spent seven years researching this book and it shows. It is incredible, I highly recommend it. 💙📚 💡📚 #booksky

Recently I finished Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng by Kylie Lee Baker. And I was blown away, the hype is real. We've got serial killers, hungry ghosts, covid, racism, revenge. Cora becomes a crime scene clean up worker after her sister is murdered and it takes off from there. #booksky📚💙📚🩸

So I just finished Eat the Ones You Love by Sarah Maria Griffin and it was so much fun! This is a sapphic retelling of Little Shop of Horrors. I loved the multiple POV especially the plant's. I wouldn't call this one gory but it is still horror. I loved this one, plus the cover is 💚. #booksky📚💙📚🩸

I finished a gothic, creepy alternate history set on the moon, Crypt of the Moon Spider by Nathan Ballingrud. Set in 1923, on the moon is an asylum where our main character gets dumped off by her husband for being depressed. Everything is not as it seems. I ended up loving this one. #booksky📚💙📚🩸

Recently I finished Beneath the Grand Hotel by Cat Scully. This was a fun take on the Faustian bargain. Set in 1925 New York, Mabel winds up at the Grand Hotel performing nightly while trying to win back her soul. This was fun and more light hearted than I expected, lush descriptions. #booksky📚💙📚🩸

Today I finished a non fiction book: No More Tears: The Dark Secrets of Johnson & Johnson by Gardiner Harris. This was a fascinating take down of Johnson & Johnson, at times hard to read but very interesting. I recommend this one for sure. #booksky💡💙📚

I read I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman. This is a translated work, came out in 1995. It's dystopian sci-fi, 40 women live in a cage underground, one day our narrator helps them escape into the world above. This was different for me but I ended up liking it a lot. #booksky📚💙

So I just finished The Staircase in the Woods by Chuck Wendig and I am in love. This book was amazing, liminal space horror, a group of friends past and present. This book just got under my skin in the best way. No spoilers from me. I highly recommend this one. #booksky🩸📚💙

I finished a young adult novel in verse called I Am the Swarm by Hayley Chewins. The women in the strand family get their magic at age 15. Nell's mother's age changes daily, her sister bleeds music and Nell's magic comes as ladybugs, then butterflies then the wasps come. I recommend it. #booksky📚💙
