Pity my mother, with offspring such as me…
Signed copy of “In Venezuela”, addressed “To Mummy Willie - Happy Travels” signed by Michael Palin.

Good luck. I think a school friend’s parents are still in recovery from the sleepover of 1993. And her dad went over and stayed at his mate’s house, leaving his wife to handle the situation solo.

This may be my favourite postscript of all time. The author and his son-in-law were being investigated for plotting against Oliver Cromwell in 1656.

'I desire my daughter to send me a Cheese, for this my restraint hath forced me to eate them she sent before sooner then was intended'.

There are also instances of women preaching and in positions of power in various sects throughout the Middle Ages and women also had a priestly role in the Early Church.
drnaomibaker.bsky.social
As the first female Archbishop of Canterbury is appointed, it’s worth remembering that dissenting women were preaching to mixed sex congregations in London as early as 1645. My book Voices of Thunder has a whole section on 17th-century “she-preachers”

It’s astonishing that we’re hearing this from a former Human Rights Lawyer. Talk about poacher turned game keeper.

My favourite are toucan for the expert punnage and Pegasus for their scarcity. Indeed, Pegasus is so rare that I would suspect them to be mythical if it were not for sightings in Wimbledon village. Maybe the Wombles are to blame.
racheljwillie.bsky.social
Zebra = white stripes on the road. Cars must give way to allow any pedestrians at the side of the road to cross.

Pegasus = crossing with the button about 2 metres up the pole, to allow those on horseback to press the button without dismounting & a green horse trotting instead of a green man walking
racheljwillie.bsky.social
Pelican = your common all garden green man walking crossing

Puffin (Pedestrian User-Friendly INtelligent Crossing) = the pelican upgrade, where the green man is above button & sensors adjust the length of time to cross to suit your gait

Toucan = bikes & pedestrians. Two Can cross at the same time

Remembering the time we tried to explain pelican, puffin, toucan, zebra and pegasus crossings to @matthewharrison.bsky.social, though I suspect he still doesn’t believe us…

Lily Dunn's 'Into Being' is a milestone text in the art of life writing. I'm looking forward to chairing a discussion with her at @rilch-ljmu.bsky.social next month. It will be a great evening about how we raise raw personal material and make it powerfully universal.

Fabulous turnout to hear our very own Kate Walchester discuss travel writing with Michael Palin as part of the Smithdown Litfest. Your correspondent might have not picked the best spot for paparazzi images of our two celebrities, but is very much enjoying hearing tales of travel 🫣🥴
Interior of Ullet Road Unitarian Church, off Smithdown Road, Liverpool, with the backs of people crammed into pews to listen to Michael Palin reminisce with Kate Walchester about his travels and promote his new book on Venezuela.

Important work by @britishacademy.bsky.social, keeping track of emerging cold spots, and contracting opportunities for young people who want to make a difference in the world through the study of SHAPE subjects.

Humanities, arts and social sciences degrees are disappearing in many UK regions.

With more young people than ever studying close to home, course cuts are narrowing their choices at university.

In a desperate attempt to leave childhood, in 1999, the class of 1992 tunnelled under the school’s perimeter & through the Castle Dell, before scaling the castle wall & swimming across the River Wye. This proved a noble (yet vain) attempt by the fugitives to shake off Artex & Bastian’s hot pursuit.

Why did they call it “The Never Ending Story” when it has an ending? How come we’re not still trapped, sitting cross-legged in the school hall, wilting under the pressure of having begun watching it on VHS as our class Christmas party treat in 1989? #FalseAdvertising
