'When authoritarians seize power, it is crucial to recognize courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist,' the Norwegian Nobel Committee said as it announced Maria Corina Machado as the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

Thanks!! I’d forgotten how good it feels (and looks) to do this by hand

It may not be the fastest or most efficient method, but there’s something peaceful and cathartic about inking hand drawn backgrounds with a ruler again
A photo of a cropped portion of an ink drawing showing the windows of skyscrapers in perspective

Ugh, I’d love a director’s cut of this movie someday. Literally my tweenage fantasy was to be “rescued” from my life by aliens who “really got me” (translation: I was neurodivergent, didn’t know it, and loved The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy) so by all rights Elio should’ve been an all time fave
rachelordwayart.bsky.social
Oh man, that would’ve been good too!

…so the kids wanting revenge feels “justified” and Elio just seems like “obsessed with aliens to the exclusion of everything else.” Being bullied for being different / pressured to conform gives him way more motivation for wanting to leave town (Earth) and find people who will accept him for himself
rachelordwayart.bsky.social
Yeah, I really liked the premise but the execution fell flat to me in a way that didn’t make sense til I heard about the expunged queer subtext. Like, Elio’s first onscreen interaction with other kids has HIM in the wrong (luring other kids to the beach so he can steal their equipment)…

I’m late but oh my god, new Ranma was so good 😭 Longtime pals will know I woulda loved a ninja cameo (if he was in there, I didn’t see him), but I feel so blessed to finally see this moment animated
A panel from Ranma 1/2. Kuno is sitting on the floor, bent over, trembling, and clearly annoyed at Ranma standing nonchalantly on top of Kuno’s head. Kuno grumbles “Just where…do you think…you are standing?!” Ranma, looking at a piece of paper in his hand, replies “Check it out.” Ranma holds the paper in front of Kuno’s exasperated face. It reads “Saotome: Meet me on top of Upperclassman Kuno’s head in the training hall. Gosunkugi.”

I only switched to mechanical pencils for SIX MONTHS
rachelordwayart.bsky.social
I keep trying to fight my hoarding instincts, but companies aren’t making it easy for me 😣 what do you MEAN Prismacolor no longer sells individual Light Blue Col-Erase pencils outside of sets????
rachelordwayart.bsky.social
Oh god, same. If I go even a few days without drawing—even if I’ve done other art things like inking or coloring—I’m SO SCARED to put pencil to paper again 🥲

I love your environment work!! It looks believable cus of the precise observation and understanding of perspective, but also energetic cus of the looseness and juiciness of the lines. Very much “the real world, but better” if that makes any sense outside my head

While defending the luddite argument in Discord, I stumbled into this IMO succinct explanation for opposing generative AI:

At every step in the process, it impoverishes us.
AI impoverishes us at every step of the process:
- data centers pollute our environment
- energy use drives up costs
- content theft robs creators of income
- the actual output is used to displace workers and depress wages
- using it harms our mental health and impairs our competence
- the flood of AI slop is damaging our sociopolitical landscape

All in service of making a worse product - and world - to enrich a handful of already spectacularly wealthy people

The thing about the new Ranma 1/2 anime that makes it stand out so much compared to the old anime isn’t just the incredible animation, creative direction and faithful recreation of the manga’s humour and style, but the fact that this show really loves Akane in ways the original anime didn’t.

#MaisonIkkoku
A page of pencil sketches of of Yotsuya, Akemi, and Mrs. Ichinose from Maison Ikkoku. Yotsuya is a Japanese man with short-cut, slicked-back black hair, thick eyebrows, narrow eyes, and a long thin face, wearing a suit and tie. Akemi is a young Japanese woman with long, poofy, curly, bright red 80s hair wearing a short-sleeved yellow sweater and leather pants. Mrs. Ichinose is a short, plus-size Japanese woman with dark hair pulled into a low bun, wearing a sweater over a collared shirt. At the top are a series of sketches of Yotsuya. In one he stands with his arms folded, looking down his nose with a blank or even disapproving expression at something offscreen. In the next, he gives a similarly bland disapproving expression as he says to someone offscreen "[some unhinged bullshit]" In the next, he smiles mischievously, humming a musical note. A small sketch below shows Akemi nudging Yotsuya teasingly as he blushes and glances away. Akemi remarks, "Hey, you made an expression and you're not even drunk!" Yotsuya replies stoically, "Merely an oversight." A large sketch shows Akemi standing with a hand on her hip, grinning slyly at the viewer as she announces, "I hear Godai's so poor, he puts grape jelly in his water and calls it wine." Behind her, Yotsuya is stoically pouring a drink for Mrs. Ichinose, who glares at Akemi in annoyance and counters, "I hear Godai-kun's so poor, he lives here with us!" "Indeed," Yotsuya agrees dryly.

Some #sketch es from when I was reading "Suki Dakara Suki" aka "Suki: A Like Story" by #CLAMP , which I’d never read before and fell head over heels for, largely because I was reading (into) it as “autistic girl is peer pressured to be less autistic but wins out in the end”
The first of a series of sketches of Hina and Sensei from the manga Suki: A Like Story. Hina is a slim teenage Japanese girl with short black hair that sticks up wildly all overm wearing a sweater over a turtleneck shirt. Sensei is a tall, broad-shouldered Japanese man with a strong jaw, short black hair with long bangs, and thin oval-shaped glasses, wearing a suit and tie. Sketch 1: Hina excitedly shoves a teddy bear into Sensei's face while he flinches backward uncomfortably. Hina gushes, "You can hold my bear if you want!" Sensei replies, "I do not wish to hold the bear." Hina continues, "I get the feeling you two are going to be good friends!" 2: Sensei gazing off into the distance looking awkward and embarrassed. 3: Hina giggling with excitement. More sketches of Hina. 1: Hina clasps her hands together, saying excitedly, "You're the nicest person I've ever met!" Offscreen, Sensei replies, "You've known me for five minutes." Hina continues, "I trust you with my life!" and Sensei replies, "Hina..." 2: A chibi sketch of Hina clenching her fists and looking excitedly determined. 3: Hina leans forward, smiling and talking, her hands clasped behind her back.

Turns out the reason I haven’t been posting art (if you can call this “art”) is because I haven’t scanned my sketchbook in months, oops

Anyway here's Meiling Li from #CardcaptorSakura
#sketch
Sketches of Meiling Li from Cardcaptor Sakura. She's an athletically slim 9-year-old Chinese girl with long black hair tied up in twin buns that trail into twin pigtails, wearing a Chinese- style dress with long flowing sleeves that end in bells. In one sketch she's standing arrogantly with her arms crossed, in another she's raising her fists excitedly and shouting.

I can only hope to be a tiny fraction of the storyteller that Will Eisner was. The Spirit had a deep effect on my work, particularly Bixby Grant, Private Eye. If you like The Spirit, read my comics and see if you see the influence. Link in comments or bio. #kickstarter #indiecomics #bixbygrant

(but seriously, nice work!)
