Train Beer Friday: Fest Xpress by Runaway Train Brewery in Honesdale, PA. While I’ve featured this brewery twice before on X, this time it’s their Festbier offering during the heart of Oktoberfest. Included maps below. Right off the still-active Stourbridge Line excursion railroad.🍻

As a student at CUA back in those days, I often was over in Dupont for a haircut (I went to Eunice at Haircuttery there for a good 15 years) along with the first Metro-accessible Chipotle. Later on, I was informed of the majestic beer selection at The Brickskellar (RIP).

This elevator entrance was dodgy even back when I first went to Dupont Circle in 1999 (but sometimes necessary given how often the escalators were out of service before the canopies). Glad to see it enhanced & improved)

🚧 A new elevator has been installed at Dupont Circle station, replacing the previous one from 1977! It now connects the street to the mezzanine with 110% faster speed than the previous model. 💨

Why haven’t philosopher-kings ever been able to figure out how to get past this kind of absurdity?

They shouldn’t move downtown just for the current Crescent. Worse trip for maybe a couple of daily riders added. I don’t think even adding a ATL-Ft Worth I-20 Corridor branch makes it worthwhile. Just if there’s new, terminating corridor routes out of ATL.
railmag.bsky.social
Sure, but without a strategy for intercity/regional service and affording infrastructure on the legacy corridors, no way to access the massive airport…
railmag.bsky.social
I’m not so much worried about it but it seems there’s lots of local interest in doing it without any specific funding for new corridor routes that could encourage the decoupling of the Crescent route. Most likely, all we’ll see in the next decade would be the ATL-Ft Worth I-20 Corridor.

Observe the Crescent’s current route in the first map, and the 2nd map where the current Atlanta Peachtree Station and downtown Atlanta are highlighted with arrows. There’s no good solutions…

Circa 2009 during the high gas prices. I was on a small transit nerd tour with then-WMATA GM Dan Tangherlini who cracked about one-time historic crowds on Inauguration Days, "and now we just call that Tuesday." Daily rail ridership around then was about 900,000. It's about 780,000 now.

Atlanta absolutely needs a downtown passenger rail station. But my question is how do you route Amtrak's Crescent through there without 2 reverse moves unless it's re-routed via Montgomery? The abandonment of Belt Line segments has reduced operational capacity for through-routed passenger trains.

While I mostly focus on N American passenger rail here, anything that also gets more freight on rail and off the roads is a win in for the larger transportation network. Baltimore’s historic Howard Street Tunnel is a crucial asset for freight in the Northeast & Mid-Atlantic. Congrats, CSX!
