As far back as 1500 BC, gender was divided into 3 categories. This evolved into hijra identity and culture, who held diverse roles in society. In the 1850s, the British colonial powers systematically targeted hijras, who they saw as a threat to oppression. The community survived and ~500,000 hijras live in India today - but scars of colonial persecution remain."
