A Vajrayana Buddhist thangka, made in in the Indo-Tibetan style: the piece depicts the multi-armed leopard deity Mahāśmaśānavajra in blissful union with his consort, the Tibetan blue bear Ākāśasamáyā (Randāmahālochana). The two sit atop a lotus, radiating the flames of pristine awareness. Mahasmasanavajra wields a sword with which to cleave through appearance, a kartika, and two vajras. Akasasamaya passionately embraces his partner, kissing his mouth, and acting as the recipient in the sex act. A retinue of dakas flank them, who dance in transcendent frenzy. The two attendants are a Tibetan fox and a rock agama lizard; they are both nude, and wield kartikas and kapalas, wrathful in appearance.
