My first show was Portland, 10/2/77, they opened with Casey Jones and Jerry was screwing up vocally all over the place. But his playing was on fire. That Casey Jones was kind of legendary because of the mistakes and the jams out of them.
Not to be too literal, but the Dead would forget a verse and jam through it until the next one came along. They didn’t fuck up for two hours, unless you just didn’t like them. But the jams in those mistakes could end up being high points.
