Another section of our multi-part pre order saga is the new Tools magazine, this time taking in the act of spinning. We know a lot of you like to do that stuff. So get in on the action, copies hitting the shop early next week directly from France.
An image of the front cover of the new issue of the magazine Tools, which features a big red orange glazed jug/pot/receptacle on a white background and the word “TOOLS” written in a similar shade at the top of the magazine’s cover.

The Tower is out today, and we have Thea in the shop tomorrow evening talking with Jodie Matthews about fairytales and folk and stories. You can come - tickets from the site or the counter now

It’s us. Big load of new book releases today, autumn magazine arrivals, fancy pencils and coffee all day
A photo of the front of the shop Rare Mags which is blue and contains books and magazines. Either side of the shop are jasmines in pots, a pink bench and a black bench. You can see a bit of pavement and the door is open. The inside of the door is white. The lights are on in the window display which gives a warm look as the overall weather appears to be quite grey.

We’re going to keep hand writing you a note with every web order, hand writing the address label, running events so that people can be in the same room as each other, recommending stuff we think you’ll like, making you a coffee (with a biscuit) even saying hello when you walk in. Ta.
A photograph of the inside of the book and magazine shop Rare Mags showing various shelves made from plywood displaying books and magazines with their covers facing outwards. Also in the centre of the shop are two display units with stationery within.

We’re here selling books and magazines (print is dead), in a physical shop (the high street is dead), writing these words using a human brain (we don’t even need to think any more though right?)
A photograph of a blue shop front for the shop Rare Mags with books and magazines in the window, a plant either side and a bench either side. The bench on the left is black, the bench on the right is pink.

We’re here for another week of this stuff. Expect A/W 2025 influx, pre orders for the new Calling In Sick and Tools flying out, new Olga Tokarczuk (!!!), more stationery favourites from Penco, maybe even a Rare Dunk or two.
A photograph of the blue painted frontage of the magazine and book shop Rare Mags. There is a road narrows sign to the right, two benches (one pink, one black) and a pavement sign made from ply which has seen better days and is due to be replaced very soon. Also the whole photo is covered in lens flare due to the time of day/angle of the sun

Just us in the middle of it all. The street is changing around us, hang in there while we get some new neighbours. We’ll be here.

New stuff every day, coffee machine on, every day apart from Mondays, all on the website is in stock, ready to go. Happy to help, we love what we do.
A photograph showing the shop front of Rare Mags (blue) with various other buildings that are either falling down or being built. To the left of the frame is a crane extending upwards (blue and orange)

We’ve looked in to this before, hasn’t been a new issue for a while so keeping an eye on it for the future

Newly constructed (by Holly, who else?) stationery displays are in the shop now. We welcome Penco to go with our old friends Kaweco and Milan. A selection of what you need and want to make marks on paper. On the site too, but you’ll have to imagine the newly oiled plywood smell.

Two stone cold classics!

Due to the sheer number of new magazines arriving, the highway is narrowed. All roads lead to good print.
A photograph showing a roadworks “road narrows” sign from a low angle, with four magazines propped against it. The magazines are the latest issues of The New Order, Chalk, Never Too Small and Boys! Boys! Boys!

Craig from Reddish Ale asked me to draw an old tourist board type poster to stick up in their neighbouring Reddish Vale to point possible punters towards pints after a walk. This is the online version but the IRL version has "Thirsty? x minutes walk to Reddish Ale -->" type instruction.
Old school transport / tourist board illustrated poster "Visit Reddish Ale" where Refreshment Awaits! Vale then Ale. Reddish viaduct with idyllic Reddish Vale surrounds. Person walks past thinking of a pint and crisps, a modern walker looks at water probably thinking the same. two pints cheers in the foreground. Vale then Ale we all agree

This is a serious bit of print and we’re very excited to see where it goes. For fans of Delayed Gratification, Translator, Macguffin and the sorely missed Works That Work. Up on the site now, or of course on the shelf.

Chalk is here, an arts magazine about science, a history magazine that covers sustainability. It includes writing on volcanoes and racism is Brazilian football and dung beetles, folklore, the national video game museum, steam trains and prehistoric oreodonts (think dog sized camels).
A photograph of the magazine Chalk. The cover is green and features and graphic photograph of a oreodont’s skull.

Counter views. We’re the magazine shop with the books, that’ll do you a really good coffee (with a biscuit) and talk you through our fancy pens and pencils too.
A photograph of the glass counter of the shop Rare Mags. It displays pens and pencils. Also visible - book shelves showing cinema and photographs titles and a small Gaggia coffee machine. And the open door of the shop, looking out on to the street.

A new issue of the clothing history magazine Avant has arrived. This time we hear the voices of the vintage clothing industry - collectors, dealers, designers. The interviews are varied and fascinating and it’s a great dive in to what connects a love of old rags.
