Wow! Now that is nice to hear. Thanks for reading Chris, I’m so glad you liked it. I enjoyed writing and researching this one.

Wrote about the larch tree this weekend for The New York Times. It’s a wonderful tree and has been integral to our economy and industry over the last 300 years. A disease is currently threatening its future but @forestresearchuk.bsky.social are on the case.

Had proper full moon insomnia last night. Went outside at 3am, garden was lit like a headlight over the hill. Stood on a slug and saw a hedgehog.

I’m running a non fiction course again this autumn.

You can join me as I finish the 1st draft of my book, file a travel commission to a VERY tight deadline & deliver an essay for a collection I kind of forgot.

Read here for what course actually entails. ⬇️

When the kids go back to school and you write 1000 words in a few hours.
God I’ve missed working.

Picked and cooked chanterelles today. We checked and checked, naturally, and fried them in simple butter. Delicious.

Today I held the finished copy of my book for the first time. Three years (or a lifetime?) in the making, and in just a month, it’ll be in readers’ hands.

'Drystone – A Life Rebuilt' is out 7 August.

A copy of the book Drystone – A Life Rebuilt by Kristie De Garis, propped upright on a drystone wall surrounded by bright yellow and green garden plants. The cover features five colourful stone shapes with the title text layered across them.

There are lots of 'firsts' when you're a debut author. Many exciting milestones. Today, I’m thrilled to share the very first quote for my book Drystone – A Life Rebuilt.

From the brilliant @rebeccasmithauthor.bsky.social Author of Rural: The Lives of the Working Class.

A black square with this writing in white

“An incredibly powerful debut,
Drystone - A Life Rebuilt is an account of survival, strength, and quiet transformation that stays with you long after the final page. Written with clarity and compassion, it reflects not only life’s hardest moments, but its tender, deeply human ones too. A life-affirming work.”
