Reclaim the Agenda are horrified by genocide and starvation in Gaza. One of our key aims is that women live a life free from violence. We know the conflict is disproportionately impacting women & children.
We call on everyone to stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine and call for peace.
Statement on Genocide and Starvation in Gaza. 7/10/25
Solidarity beyond borders, women for world peace. Reclaim the Agenda, formed of women from centres, networks, community and activist groups from all areas of Northern Ireland, are horrified by genocide and starvation in Gaza. One of our key aims is that women live a life free from violence, and we know the conflict is disproportionately impacting women and children.
For the past two years we have witnessed an escalation in violence, killing and starvation enacted by Israel. The International Association of Genocide Scholars and the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory have named Israel’s actions as genocide. Famine was declared in Gaza City on 22 August 2025 by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification. This famine is not due to crops failing but deliberate action. The World Food Programme have highlighted not only the lack of access to food and water, but also shelter and medicine; a humanitarian crisis of Israel’s making.
The UN estimate that since October 2023 more than 28,000 women and girls have been killed and 78,518 injured, and more than 58,600 households in Gaza are now headed by women. Nearly a quarter of a million women and girls in Gaza are starving, and over half a million more are facing extreme hunger and acute malnutrition.
According to the UN Population Fund around 700,000 women and girls are attempting to manage menstruation with a lack of sanitation and menstrual products. Further, for the approximately 50,000 pregnant women in Gaza, there is no maternal healthcare and miscarriages have increased 300%.
We name and condemn the actions of Israel for what they are – genocide and starvation. We call on both Hamas and the Israeli government to release all hostages and detainees.
We also note the disproportionate targeting of women in relation to pro-Palestinian protest and are concerned at increased restrictions on the right to protest and freedom of speech locally. We condemn the actions of Israel against those on the Flotilla attempting to break the siege, including subjecting women to degrading treatment.
We call on anyone in a position of diplomatic power to urge Israel to end the genocide, siege and starvation of Gaza. We call on everyone to stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine and call for peace.
