Why did Freud chose to go with “psyche,” rather than “Geist” in his study of the unconsciousness? Because “Geist” is closely associated with reason, the rational part of the mind.

The mutual invocation of machine and human body has a long history. Post Enlightenment thinkers often compare body/brain to a well-run, properly-oiled machine. Per the computer scientist, Marvin Minsky, the human body is a “meat machine.” Yuck.

As Hellmut Bock explains: Geist has roots in both Greek philosophy and the Bible. In Greek, pneuma meant “breath,” which evolved into the idea of the “innermost part of man” and then the “soul that came from the gods and will return to them.”
