I suddenly have a bunch of followers. Welcome!
I am a physician who sees patients each day. I have past experience in federal government, public health, and biosecurity (the field that deals with global threats to health).
Thank you!

How important is a fighter aircraft when you can make lots and lots of drones for the same price?

The Atlantic also platformed some of the absolute worst people in their articles about COVID, including Vinay Prasad (who is now directing the FDA's efforts to block vaccine access) and Emily Oster (who once argued that we shouldn't help provide HIV meds to Africans).

I canceled my subscription.

I'm still surprised that his administration started off by dramatically diminishing state capacity, through firing, cuts, and dismantling whole departments (incl Dept of Education!?). Wouldn't an authoritarian want a robust, sprawling state bureaucracy that intrudes everywhere?

A legend of public health has died. Dr. William Foege co-led the successful global effort to eradicate smallpox, and later was director of the CDC.

I quite recommend his book, "House on Fire." It is a remarkable account of smallpox eradication, one of the greatest public health achievements ever.

I thought it was good! The last part is interesting if you’re a doctor.

Testifying in a deposition just as a witness is hugely stressful. Let alone being the accused.

I don’t know if it would have made a difference, but one of the gunshot wounds was to the arm, and a tourniquet could have been applied to slow the bleeding from there.

Which is also why this administration is attacking mail in voting so fiercely, to force people to vote in person.

Cut Rand Paul a break, it's not like he's a physician or anything. How is he supposed to understand NSF grants and math?

It would let the government identify whoever is looking up the QR code.

If there are no vaccines on the moon, then why is it called a moonshot?
January 7, 2026 at 4:59 AM
The moon does have frequent outbreaks of moononucleosis.

The question that everyone’s dying to know: did you ship all of these books to NZ?

Enron is the best at cooking books.

That’s common with solar purpura. The skin is really fragile, it tears very easily and weeps blood.

I am saying that the bruising to the back of is hands can be explained very easily just with the information we already have. I think it’s a red herring.

Below is link to article where White House says he’s on aspirin.
Trump’s Now Been Covering His Hand With a Bandage for a Full Week
Donald Trump has now marked an entire week of sporting mysterious bandages on his problematic right hand. Trump, 79, headed to Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday to front a rally addressing the co...

Also, IVs can be inserted plenty of places that aren't people's hands.

I just don't think the bruising to the hands is a probable sign of some unexplained medical condition.

I am not saying Trump is healthy. I am not saying Trump should withhold his medical records...

We know that Trump is old, has fair skin, spends a lot of time outside golfing, and has visible sun damage to his face. The White House press secretary has said he is on aspirin. And he shakes lots of people's hands, which triggers bruises. It would be surprising if he didn't have solar purpura.
December 29, 2025 at 4:34 AM
Solar purpura is bruising to the backs of the hands due to prior sun damage, old age, and sometimes anticoagulants including aspirin. The chronic sun damage makes the skin and superficial blood vessels very fragile and prone to bruising and bleeding.

I commented on a post and it blew up a bit.
I regularly see conspiracy theories on here that because Trump has bruises to the backs of his hands, that he is secretly having IV infusions.

I believe a much likelier explanation is solar purpura, a common condition in elderly Caucasian men.

I totally agree. And I‘m even ok with jumping to conclusions, but they need to be well-informed jumps.

More susceptible to sun damage. The chronic sun damage makes the skin and the superficial blood vessels more fragile and prone to bruising. And that’s why solar purpura affects the back of the hands the most, lots of sun there and no clothing over it
