There is a strong correlation between quality of legal representation and whether or not someone receives the death penalty. Being unable to afford a good lawyer can literally be a death sentence.

Life in Gaza, however, will require massive reconstruction. Tens of thousands have been killed by Israel. Homes, hospitals, and infrastructure lie in ruins. The trauma will persist for generations.

A ceasefire in Gaza went into effect at 12 p.m. local time (5 a.m. ET) today. We are hopeful that this marks the end of a brutal two-year war and that the surviving hostages taken by Hamas on Oct. 7th will soon return home.

October 10th is World Day Against the Death Penalty.

Since 1973, 200 innocent people have been exonerated from death row in the United States. It's estimated that at least 4% of people sentenced to death were — and are — likely innocent.

Today would have been Fannie Lou Hamer's 107th birthday!

Hamer — a survivor of police brutality, white supremacist attacks, and forced sterilization — devoted her life to working for peace and justice. As an anti-abortion feminist, she didn’t leave anyone behind in her work.
