I often get pulled out of line and hand-searched because of my insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor. I make a great effort to be good natured and polite in these situations, because it can't be fun.

Salmon, mostly! There was a massive salmon run in Katmai this year, and ALL the bears bulked up impressively.

I think this kind of reporting is one of the reasons the rangers are phasing out the use of official nicknames. It's harder to anthropomorphize a number.

(Also, the piece has several errors. But that's really beside the point.)

486, not 32, was the bear that killed 402 last summer. 32 did kill 128's cub, but it was before the vote, so "sore loser" doesn't apply.

His opponent in the final, 856, is also a known cub-killer. As humans we find it upsetting, but it's pretty normal male bear behavior.

I think it's healed as much as it's going to. But given that he was able to do so well this year, when the injury was fresh, he will probably be okay.

It's dire. Powell's didn't have the book I wanted! Well, it had the 1994 hardcover, as well as several copies of the new reissue, but I was looking for the *1995 trade paperback*. Heartbreaking.
