happy halloween! obligatory lucilius drawing
No yeah villains in musicals always deliver ... It makes me tear up it's so bad (done well)
I CANT TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. Same with the ending of ruthlessness WHY DID THEY DO THAT
He does win but at what cost... I guess he still got the only thing he wanted (his family) so what does everything else matter...
the last saga just doesn't hold much weight to me. As far as Odysseus is concerned, anyway... I do agree that it's silly to suddenly have him regretting things there but again I do not know what's in the odyssey, so I can't really make a comment there. I don't know what went on.
You could say the majority of the musical Is his retelling of events (which would make it marginally better if he's going himself up to the suitors as a tragic hero. Rather than the musical being the events As they happened) but the pacing for the first half vs the second is wildly different &
I'm not rly sure about the celebratory part bc majority of the musical is just depressing and then he goes on a killing spree and it just feels Whatever to me despite it being the final Big moment of the musical ... I would have liked if there was an extra song in there for his time in the palace?
OHHH I see, I misread what you said. I think it still goes that he's being punished for his vanity, but it is a big change if Poseidon saying he should have killed polyphemus wasn't in the odyssey at all.
Dw you can chat all you want :3€ it's fun
Both Athena & Poseidon are very direct about what he's done wrong, and even Eurylochus points out problems w his behavior / plans, and (by extension, the rest of the crew) loses faith in him.
He's tired of war and tries to follow in his friend's footsteps, despite initially rejecting the idea. But he insists upon it to a fault, leading to blood on his hands bc he couldn't handle doing what was necessary to actually get everyone back alive.
Sacking a city is obviously lol but it is different fighting adults vs a child. And he does ultimately make the choice to kill the baby for his own interests. His refusal to listen to Athena imo is another intentional showcase of a character flaw, rather than uwu Ody is so kind!
Ruthlessness is entirely about Getting the Job Done, and when Odysseus goes Oh, we just wanted to escape! that adds to the insult. Because Odysseus doesn't seem to grasp what exactly he's done wrong, instead insisting he didn't intend to hurt the cyclops.
Hmm I think that's a different interpretation - from what I understood Poseidon /was/ angry that Odysseus didn't kill Polyphemus; hurting him, revealing his name, and then leaving without finishing the job is why he was pissed off. I didn't feel at all that Poseidon was Upset his son was hurt.
COMPLETELY! unrelated. I like the sheep sounds in Polyphemus.
and his own lines give away that he isn't a very good person - refusing to apologize to Poseidon, putting his crew in danger for his own interests, etc (I'd give more examples but it's been a minute since I've listened through)
So that isn't much for comparison... TBH I think fandom response has also warped it a little bit bc I didn't really get the impression that he was supposed to be seen as a good person. The overdone I'm just a man line aside there are many points where other characters point out his flaws,
I'm not familiar w the odyssey so I can't comment much on his character! I do think many of the characters were simplified tho. I'm also not super into musicals overall so I don't have much to compare it to ... The only sung thru one I can think of is 36 questions but there are only 2 characters.
narrative purposes (bc the story is entirely songs vs a stage production) rather than him hogging attention.
I wasn't a big fan of suffering tho so I think personal taste is a major factor there. I do like lea's voice but umm the challenge for example took a few listens before I grew to like it. It definitely would have been more fun for there to be solos but my impression was more that he was there for
No longer you is rly good!! I don't care much for his voice either but there are some moments he pulls off well. In general he's better suited for a lighter role I feel? The jaded Odysseus later on is especially rough to listen to, I don't think any of his parts in the last saga were to my taste.
ohhh I see. I agree that some of it is a bit uhhh? Not great but it's also some guy's little project. It isn't a Broadway production... I enjoy it for what it is! I quite liked the cyclops saga + scylla ...
