Reptile survey mats have been placed on Hackney Marshes. These will be used in an ongoing survey with LARG the main species that we will be on the lookout for is the Grass snake, but these mats will also be useful to monitor small mammals after the long term recovery project led by ReNature.

A shameful act of habitat destruction, needlessly felling this ancient oak tree.

With the successful recovery of small mammal species on Hackney Marshes predators have returned, including Kestrels, so we’ve put a kestrel box on a large standing log pile.

Please read @wildlifeian.bsky.social replies to this post. While we agree with what Alex says in the statement below. Using the press coverage our project has received to make a point is unhelpful. This was a three year project, mostly unpaid that has delivered fantastic results.

To my mind, as an ecologist, it’s not #rewilding when they remove native species & plonk them somewhere less inconvenient for developers, where they often die; nor is it #rewilding when species that are not locally native are introduced - no matter how much the media & CICs love a feelgood story.

Curious to hear this claim that Hackney Council is giving permission to introduce reptiles to Hackney Marshes.
A few years ago, ecologists & a charity were paid thousands to remove reptiles from this area & translocate them 100+ miles away - if I recall correctly. 🙈
