there are 14 year olds in highschool, perhaps playing deltarune, who are younger than the pc i am currently using to play deltarune... it's very cool ppl are still making excellent things that don't need crazy hardware to run

These days 99% of 'an historic' sayers in the whole anglosphere are making a stylistic exception for that one phrase and don't actually apply the rule naturally. E.g. they're not saying 'an hotel' or 'an habitual' as well... Meanwhile h-droppers will often _say_ 'an hotel' but would never write it.

But it seems there was a time when this was followed pretty strictly in some uk publications and educated speech, even words like 'hotel', well into the 20th c., but that would be surprising news to most uk/commonwealth english speakers today (it was to me). You do hear/read it in old stuff though.

as far as I know, it's not really to do with h-dropping at all, it's just a coincidence. Originally it was a thing that h-words unaccented on the first syllable would sometimes get 'an', both in the uk and usa, although it was already uncommon compared to 'a' in the 19th c.

- words derived from greek in english. There are so many ...

- familiar objects and parts of the house i live in. I have been learning about the ancient past and it reminds me that everything is going to be destroyed eventually. Also I might leave home quite soon

things i have been noticing and appreciating lately

- movement of pitch when people speak english. Studying pitch accent and tonal languages has let me consciously hear this more. It's often very melodic, and there are so many expressive subtleties and variations from person to person

i remember when i was 13 or something i played games on steam and made friends with this random american guy. Eventually he said we should do a steam voice chat and i answered and he said 'hey man' in an american accent and i was so horrified that i ended the call and unfriended him
