🎉 Happy International Research Software Engineers Day! 🎉

Today we celebrate the incredible work of Research Software Engineers (RSEs) who empower researchers through expert coding support, collaboration, and training.

💬 We’d love to hear from you!

Are you an RSE? What’s your journey been like?

Have you worked with an RSE? How did they help transform your research?

Share your stories, shout out your collaborators, and let’s celebrate the power of research software together!
researchcultureuol.bsky.social
RSEs are vital to building a more open, inclusive, and collaborative Research Culture. 💻🌍
Let’s celebrate their contributions today and every day! 🥳🙌

...This led me to be quite 'closed' and uncollaborative in my work. One of the many valuable differences RSEs can make is in supporting PGRs to take that journey towards openness much earlier in their research careers, through a combination of technical upskilling and awareness building."

We asked Sorrel to reflect on her journey and the value of RSEs:

"I'm proud to be an RSE supporting those doing computational research. When I began my PhD (a long time ago), I didn't know how to code and felt very self-conscious about my computational skills...

And what better excuse to share this brilliant comic poster by Sorrel Harriet, created for our Research Culture Community of Practice event at the University of Leeds. It tells the story of Josie, a researcher who transforms from "code chaos" to "open science hero" - thanks to the support of RSEs.
A comic-style poster titled "From Code Chaos to Open Science Hero (Thanks Leeds RSEs!)" tells the story of Josie, a researcher at the University of Leeds. In six illustrated panels, it shows her journey from struggling with coding to becoming an advocate for open science. She receives help from Research Software Engineers (RSEs), attends training, collaborates on projects, makes her software open source and citable, and inspires others to share their research software. The final panel hints at ongoing impact with the phrase “THE END?”. The poster includes links to arc.leeds.ac.uk and bit.ly/arc-help, encouraging viewers to begin their own research software journey.

I found this an excellent way to end #HiddenREF2025 yesterday. While it's important we get diverse roles and outputs the recognition they deserve - i.e. through the REF - often the REF itself can feel anti-research culture. For me, REF is a competition, but research culture is about community.

In the final session of the day, Tim Newton, Dean of Research Culture at King's College London, reflects on the connection between research culture change and PCE:
"It's important to do what's right and good, and not necessarily what's pragmatic for REF."

You'll maybe hear us reflecting on the festival on video and podcast sound bites (don't worry, we'll *definitely* signpost these as they come out). But we've already got some ideas percolating on how to enhance research culture at Leeds with a focus on hidden roles and diverse outputs.
researchcultureuol.bsky.social
In a way that feels very on brand for the idea of the #HiddenREF, there have been 4 of us from Leeds at the festival over the last two days and we didn't know we'd each be here. But that won't stop us collaborating on and coordinating our next steps!

Holly Ranger from University of Sheffield asking us whether "non-traditional" outputs is itself biased: non-traditional to whom???

Of course, using the phrase "non-traditional" accidentally centres the structures we're attempting to dismantle ("traditional").

Dr Raysa Rocha delivered a lightning talk on generating actionable insights to support neurodivergent workers and their wellbeing. We at Leeds are having conversations on how to support neurodivergent people in the research community, so this is exciting!

Day 2 of ##Hiddenref2025 and a reminder that people are as important as outputs.
researchcultureuol.bsky.social
We tried some thinking aloud with kpop, then traditional outputs. And now...non-traditional outputs from REF2021.
researchcultureuol.bsky.social
First stop for thinking about the mechanics of evaluating non-traditional outputs: thinking aloud. This is where my (Emily’s) neurodivergence finally comes into its own 😎
researchcultureuol.bsky.social
Yes, it's a fancy word. But heuristics (our shortcuts for making decisions) are everywhere. But this is a problem for output evaluation! This is why recognising diverse outputs and understanding responsible use of research metrics are important. #HiddenREF

Guys??? I think we have a problem with recognising diverse output types??
