Just last week, I shared a similar thought with a fellow librarian. Our job is to connect students with books they'll love. However, the deeper challenge is whether authors and publishers are writing for readers' interests or simply their own, hoping the audience will follow.
Here’s to another year. It’s my 28th 1st Day of School as an educator, Jalen’s Junior year at SCSU, and Jackson’s FIRED UP for 2nd Grade. 😊🤗🫶🏽
From grade school to college to career and everything between and beyond…have a a safe, successful, and prosperous year!

The same thing happened to me. I’ve rediscovered my love for reading. Now it’s more audiobooks and different genres than I previously preferred 5-10 years ago.

✨ What a week celebrating Tracie Harden as the 2025 DeKalb Library Media Specialist of the Year. From the DCSD April Board Mtg. recognition to being surprised at the Open Mic Poetry Slam she hosted at Clarkston HS, we honored her incredible work as a teacher-librarian. 📚 🎉 @dsefinc.bsky.social
This was the beauty of reading when I grew up. No one was using a company’s reading yardstick or some standardized test metrics to limit and stifle me to a range of books with a number or sticker on the spine.
Exactly. I tell students & educators that reading is like clothes shopping. Everything will not fit your style. Then there will be times when you come across something you normally would not like, but upon trying it out, you discover it’s totally you! Select - try it out/on - like/abandon - REPEAT!
Yes!!!!! This!!!! As a former ELA teacher and current library administrator, I want people, especially educators, to stop book-shaming students for the books THEY select to read for pleasure and enjoyment and then complain when students stop and no longer want to read.
Most bandwagons pass me by before I even realize it’s a thing. However, I decided to jump on this latest ChatGPT one during my Spring Break.
Whether it was providing program support, participating in Friends of the Library Friday promoting resources, celebrating employees passing their GACE, or processing music instrument inventory in the warehouse for delivery to schools, Friday before Spring Break was a VERY GOOD and BUSY day for EMIM!
Being asked by the PE teacher to assist with their roller skating unit is still ranked as one of my top career highlights. The icing on the cake was joining them in the gym for the culminating roller skating day. We all had a ball rolling around the gym.
I always love collaborating with our Specials/Connections teachers. It’s truly a game changer. Plus these classes are often more connected to students’ varied interests and are easy to make real-world “connections”.

Hey BookSky, Remember that professional football player who was pictured reading a book on the sideline and when asked about it he said, “I like to read.” He won the Super Bowl tonight.

READING BOOKS WINS! 📚💙

My 26 year journey serving as #schoollibrarian has brought me here. If you are a ALA Councilor, I humbly ask for your support as I run for one of the open Executive Board seats during next week’s election 🗳️. If you are not a councilor, prayers are welcomed.

If you don’t have a local library card, it should be your New Year’s resolution to get one. It’s an easy resolution to keep and you’ll actually use it, trust me.

Laurel Ridge received the Beanstack Challenge traveling trophy. Incorporated in 2022, it’s the first school in DCSD to have 100% of its students log their reading time in the Beanstack platform. Kudos to the library personnel, PK-5 Ts, staff, and leadership team.

Donna Gray and @captainlibrary.bsky.social at #sljsummit in Marketing the Library, encouraged us to consider how we encourage students to be a fuller version of themselves through programming. Any insights? I try to create lowstake spaces to facilitate the sharing of ideas. #sljsummit #TLsky
