Studying isn't just about memorizing information. It's about retrieving it. Listen to this podcast episode from NPR Life Kit for practical evidence-based strategies to improve learning and retention.

Retrieval practice isn't a test. It's a LEARNING strategy, not an assesment strategy. Read about why this distinction is the key to understanding what retrieval is and how to use it to improve teaching and learning.
Retrieval practice is not a test (so stop calling it that)
Have you heard of the "testing effect" or "test-enhanced learning?" Let's clarify: Retrieval practice is not the same thing as testing; it's the opposite.

Could you leave student papers in a pile at the back of the classroom and they can opt to find their paper on the way out? I'm curious how many students would (or might not).
retrievelearn.bsky.social
True! Perhaps Leave One Add One could be implemented with larger classes, though not all students would receive everyone else's papers. You could cap it within a time amount you have available (e.g., 10 minutes), but I can see how handing back papers to the original "owner" could be tricky.

I love this idea! I shall have a think about how it might be scaled up for larger undergraduate classes; our cohorts are over 200, and even seminar groups can be around 40-50 students, which might make it tricky but it's a great way to engage students.
