It would take just a few minutes. Say it was stolen 6½ hours into those 8. Jump halfway to 4 hours. Bike is still there. Jump halfway to 6 hours, still there. Halfway to 7 hours, gone. Halfway backwards to 6½, there's the thief. Takes hardly any time at all. (In software we call it a Binary Chop.)

They think it takes two hours to look at two hours of CCTV footage to find the moment a bike gets stolen. Like it's on celluloid film and you have to hire an organist to do the soundtrack.

Your way better represents real life, where you put one foot on the brake and one on the accelerator (and get told off for it). Their way better represents how you're told to do it, using your right foot for both. Whoever designed their system either has never karted or blindly followed orders.
