It might just be that the cable going into the headset itself is loose. It is a very testy thing, make sure it's all the way in.

Failing that, try replugging it in this order: Power, USB, DP

As far as I'm aware, it's a better idea to keep the Index unplugged until it's all booted up.

When you say it won't read as connected in SteamVR, does the HMD icon not appear at all?

It is stressful for sure. If upgrading or switching seems like it's too much hassle for you, you can enroll for Windows 10 security updates. They aren't free, but if you think it's worth it, it's there
