The thing is that most either don't or are incredibly lucky that they do. It doesn't help that so many furry artists are charging well below market value for their art; furcons usually charge less for tables than comic cons to compensate, but the hotels and airlines aren't charging any less

The extra sneaky thing here is digital print-your-own badges means that I don't even have to be going to a con to be able to take advantage of it happening

...getting a high res file of their badge that they can print as many copies as they want.
Even when I did traditional badges, I'd focus on pre-order and at-con delivery. It just made more sense to try to make an extra $500 before the con than to spend $1000 to make $1200.

Personally, if I'm going to do anything at all, I prefer doing badges in the lead-up to a con. It just already makes more sense to me than taking a bunch at the con and running the risk of having to take a bunch home to do after anyway.

Smaller cons, sure. Everything is cheaper, and there's less likelihood that people are just going to run past your table to get to their favorite big artist, merch dealer, or fashion brand. Bigger cons, for sure, I wouldn't even try tbh.

I've never really understood the practicality of focusing on DD/AA for smaller artists tbh. Especially at bigger cons.

Donβt know who needs to hear this but stop quitting your job to do artist alley and conventions, there are no benefits or health insurance and it is so unpredictable and the competition is worse than trying to get into Harvard lol

Sure it does. They get paid by the cart, and it doesn't pay enough that they can move at a reasonable pace. They have to move so fast that they misread orders or just do things without asking because waiting for a response is something they don't have time for.
