Maybe find a story you like and be inspired to put your own version of? Like how ASOIAF was inspired by Lord of the Rings? My current WIP was inspired by Stephen King. I don't mean copy or fanfic, just a similar kind of story (non conventional horror in my case)
Well, when Veronica and Syed learned their best friend Nate had been lying about his dark side their whole life and he expected them to abandon him, they forgave him but only because he'd never done major damage and made clear he'd have to turn himself in. Things go wrong but it was a nice thought
In half the divided country, identical to ours with cars, planes and trains sans boats for in universe reasons. In the other half which is still a medieval fantasy, the powerful teleport or fly with magic while the lower class are stuck with walking or horses if they even have the freedom to travel
Had to use "slope" for this one. From my crime thriller #wip. A young woman is being pursued by a group of corrupt cops on the payroll of a serial killer she escaped from, while on the phone with an honest detective trying to track her down. #writesky #writingcommunity #wipsnips
Like the creatures (Adam's) story in the Frankenstein novel? Or like a fictional story in universe like the legends in ASOIAF? I have done the former, but didn't like the eay the whole novel was going (for unrelated reasons so restarted and included the other story as a pov chapter earlier
Letting the characters come to life and drive the story even if i need to correct it later
They seem to be 🤷‍♂️. They all say that if someone dies in the ocean, they're trapped in a realm and their souls are hunted by a monster. But they have different messages. Some are begging for help. Some are warning them to get away or they'll be trapped too. Colter begs captain for help. So they stay.
We all feel your pain there. Not that you asked but definitely seems intriguing to me.
The mc's best friend on a hospital ship sunk during ww1 and the friend is killed. Thirteen years later, mc is an ocean liner captain and they encounter the Lusirania even though it sank during the war. The friend and others reappear to give conflicting views on what is going on and cause chaos
Never feels like enough, does it? 🙄
Sometimes just wondering who or what I'm doing it for. I love my job and would never give it up for this, and it can be a lot of work when not sure if I'll actually pursue querying on the side etc. I overcome it by making it my leisure time after work and a chance to let my mind wonder
This doesnt always work but sometimes you find it just expands naturally? Like the characters come to life as you write and expands on its own? The only drawback of that is you do it too much and the story can be very long (from experience)
We all know that feeling!
Or meow for playtime when you're trying to write 😅 Still love mine but every night without fail lol
Im in the "The novel is three times as long as i planned and now need to cut but every word is essential for plot and character work" phase
So number two maybe?
Your characters? I hate doing it but all my stories have some tragic devastating element to them (not complete downers but way more bitter tnan sweet). I often plan a more optimistic ending but doesnt work out lol. Is it me or does it just feel less powerful?
Time to turn and run! Its different but I have one where the monster is deliberately imitating people's deceased loved ones (supernatural so can match appearance) but giving conflicting info and cutting off at crucial moments to cause discord. While intelligent, ultimately its also just starving
Mine is that even though the continent is inhabited by humans, wizards, werewolves and vampires, its divided into two countries, and in one, all powers are suppressed by a compound in the water and it looks like our world while the other half is like a fantasy medieval setting and they must coexist
And i guess that answers the obvious why people can easily evade them. Not sure what stage ur at but good luck with the story! Sounds really interesting 👍
Couple ways. One is just talking about it with someone like a coworker can spark my interest to expand it. Another way for me and obviously can't work for every story is i set them in a shared universe. I find a certain thrill in seeing what happens to characters even if they're not the main anymore
Nice. Is it a fantasy world? Historical? Modern times but an isolated community? I'm guessing no outside help is coming.
Yeah definitely go for it! Im guessing the creature isn't malicious but just hunting for survival? Is it there one or s whole species? Sorry if pushing, just very intriguing
I don't query as I do it for fun (maybe one day if I ever think its good enough) but running/jogging is my distraction from everything and lets ideas develop too!
Good idea, like the cat mimicking the bird call. You say resemble, is it just the voice they copy or appearance too (ie shadow)?
