An impressively cryptic slice of Italian madness. Notable for its originality, there's a lot to love here. Especially John Saxon, who is a joy every time he's on screen.
While there's a high body count and some intriguing plotting, it's Bava's visual style which really makes Blood and Black Kace work. In many ways the blueprint for what was to follow.
I took a punt on this and it's surprisingly good. A vampire thriller/romance which does a lot of good work around drawing out characters. It's a real offbeat, expertly paced, slow-burn.
I love returning to this every now and then. It's just so well made. You can imagine someone looking at the concept and wondering how on earth it could be adapted into a film, but it's done in such a way which makes it really immersive and incredibly tense.
I learnt today they films studios/PRs actually proactively look to give opportunities to film fans who will write nice things about their films. Who knew?

A new Shudder low. Turns out there are a number of films that aren't available on Shudder or Prime but are available on the Shudder Prime channel. WTAF?
Plus points for Herbet Lom and the beauty of Christine Kauffman but this feels like a limp adaptation of Poe's classic. There's a lovely set to go at as well.
Nice concept with a lot of nice things in it. I'm not sure it quite works as the plot isn't sufficiently fleshed out, but it's eminently watchable. The effects are clearly dated though but nice use of light and shadows.
The Alabama Solution - The state of prisons in Alabama is sadly as bad as you'd expect. This does a great job of uncovering the truth and providing evidence which will no doubt be ignored.
