So I built a little base camp, and took shots at him standing on a rock. My biggest concern became running out of arrows, so I got down collected wood, mad some new ones, and continued.

So I checked to see how close I could get, and sure enough, he was withing firing range of me, but not vice versa.

It took me a few moments but I realized, he wasn't moving. That's when I went, wait a minute.

So I found him, got to a vantage point, and started to fire arrows. He'd do his big range attack and try and hit me from back there. The reason, again, I got closer is to lure him away.

They also have varying behavior for when they are not in range to attack, you'd expect, for them to move in closer to attack.

So apparently in valheim a boss has 2 ranges. One in which the boss bar shows up. One in which they can attack the player.
