Guitar aficionado check. Who knows who Pat Travers is? Better yet, who's seen him play? Pat Travers currently plays a mahogany Fender Stratocaster, specially made to his specs. I asked him what makes his guitar tone so unique. He held up his hands and wiggled his fingers. "The hands."

Check out this new article in Film International, where I interviewed author Gary Rhodes about the weirdest documentaries ever made (in the 1970s - 1980s).

Did you know Lake of the Woods is the 6th largest freshwater lake in the US after the 5 Great Lakes? Located between Minnesota & Ontario, carved by the Laurentide Ice Sheet's retreat 14,000 years ago, has 15,000 islands, 1,700 sq mi, 85 miles long, and has more shoreline than Lake Superior.

Devil's Tower. You may remember it as a movie location.
July 18, 2025 at 5:32 PM
Devils Tower in NE Wyoming got its name from an inaccurate translation. During an 1875 scientific expedition, Lieutenant Colonel Richard Dodge's journal entry recorded that "the Indians call this place 'bad god's tower,'" which he then modified to "Devil's Tower".

The view on the Madison River when fly fishing.
July 14, 2025 at 6:34 PM
In June I tried fly fishing, from the bow of a drift boat near Big Sky, Montana, on the Madison River in West Yellowstone. The bait depends on timing of local hatches, today it was caddisfly larvae that we were mimicking, using a double nymph rig with either 2 nymph flies or 1 nymph and 1 fish egg.

Can you find the eggs? Joel Soisson gives a wildlife lecture on the invisible eggs of a killdeer (charadrius vociferus). Its two-syllable bird call reportedly sounds like "kill deer."

Near Seattle, enjoy the Bainbridge Island retreat of Joel and Claudia Soisson. The front yard is filled with Joel's driftwood sculptures (which is what happens when there is too big a gap between Trekkies sequels).
