Bellini spent his entire long career in Venice and was the city's greatest painter in the fifteenth century. He produced a range of paintings that included altarpieces, works for private devotion, portraits, and secular scenes. For small devotional works such as the Pietà, he built upon a long tradition of Byzantine icon painting that was well known in Venice, but he also incorporated a sculptural realism and an interest in the forms of ancient Roman art that he had learned from his brother-in-law Andrea Mantegna. To this Bellini added his own poetic painterly touches. The Pietà shows young angels contemplating the savior's body. To fifteenth-century viewers, these putti, or spiritelli, represented youthful innocence and served as a foil to the inevitability of death, in this case through violence inflicted upon a good man. Unlike other versions of the subject, the angels here do not wail uncontrollably; instead there is something more poignant in their sad, contemplative preparation of Christ's body for veneration. The angel at left struggles to hold the lifeless torso upright, while that at right draws attention to the wounds of the Crucifixion. Infusing human emotion and introspection into a long-standing icon-based tradition of painting the Dead Christ, Bellini created a masterpiece of the early Renaissance. The painting had long been obscured by damages but recently underwent a comprehensive conservation treatment sponsored by Venetian Heritage. This exhibition celebrates that restoration, the details of which are outlined in a publication on sale in the Morgan's bookshop. #art #painting

When Glenn O. Coleman painted this view of New York's East River, the waterway had long been a hub for merchant ships, warships, and ferries. Here, several vessels, including a battleship, return to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. A single tower of the Brooklyn Bridge dramatically emerges from its watertight caisson as the iconic suspension bridge spans the river. In the 1920s, Coleman shifted away from street-level scenes and toward precise renderings of distant views of skyscrapers, emphasizing flattened geometric planes and blocks of color, as in this work. To the artist, skyscrapers, while fascinating, were impersonal, even isolating: "One must cross a river to view them in toto... it is too far for friendship." #art #painting

In autumn 1901, a year after arriving in Paris from Spain, Picasso painted six canvases in a singular style that inaugurated his Blue Period. Dialogue with artistic predecessors was part of this breakthrough: in this painting, Picasso looked back to café scenes by Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas by way of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. For the distinctive costume of Harlequin, he was inspired by the Italian theater tradition of the commedia dell'arte, which peaked in popularity in the eighteenth century but underwent a revival during Picasso's youth. The trickster Harlequin always wears a checkered costume, while the sad clown Pierrot has a white face, ruffs, and collar—but Picasso merged the characters for his own twist on the tradition. El Greco soon joined Picasso's diverse sources of inspiration as he developed the cool palette and distant, melancholy aspects seen in his classic Blue Period paintings. #art #painting
