Marlow's Tavern Executive Chef John Metz recommends using pre-cut, frozen saku tuna at home. (Courtesy of Brandon Amato) This week, we're sharing the V&G Buddha bowl recipe from Marlow's Tavern. The nutrient-rich dish is available at all four Marlow's Tavern locations in metro Atlanta. Executive Chef John Metz recommends that beginners and most home cooks use frozen poke. "If you can find pre-cut, frozen tuna poke, it is easier to work with," he said. "If not, look for saku tuna (block tuna), and stay away from tuna steaks." "Saku tuna is cut from the top portion of the loin and is always more tender and has less sinew," Metz added.

New drawing classes at Abernathy Arts Center focus on observation and proportion
A seated figure study underscores John Horne’s teaching emphasis on proportion, value, and sustained observation over speed or polish. (Courtesy of John Horne) When artist John Horne talks about teaching drawing, he rarely starts with technique. He starts with people. Over the years, in Metro Atlanta classrooms and studios, Horne has learned that the anxieties students bring with them — fear of failure, fear of not being “good enough,” fear of never getting it right — remain constant across generations. “Only the faces change,” he says. The work of an instructor, in Horne’s view, is not to rank talent or judge outcomes, but to meet students where they are and help them articulate where they want to go.

Supreme Court hears arguments in two critical cases on trans sports bans
The Supreme Court heard two cases today that could change how the Equal Protection Clause and Title IX are enforced. The cases, Little v. Hecox and West Virginia v. B.P.J., ask the court to determine whether state laws blocking transgender girls from participating on girls’ teams at publicly funded schools violates the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause and Title IX. Once decided, the rulings could reshape how laws addressing sex discrimination are interpreted nationwide. Chief Justice John Roberts raised questions about whether Bostock v. Clayton County — the landmark case holding that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects employees from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity — applies in the context of athletics.

Theatrical Outfit to stage world premiere of Steve Yockey’s ‘Bleeding Hearts’
Theatrical Outfit kicks off the new year with the world premiere of Atlanta playwright Steve Yockey’s "Bleeding Hearts" at the Balzer Theatre in Downtown. The "breakneck, pitch-black farce" about the disappearing middle class and how people forget to put themselves in each other’s shoes runs from Jan. 28 to Feb. 22. The story: Sloane isn’t sure why exactly her husband, Timothy, brought home a probably dangerous drifter with a knife, but she doesn’t like it. Of course, it’s hard to focus when her wealthy neighbor keeps dropping by to steal anything not nailed down.

One man’s opinion: I’m with Greenland
As chronicled in the Sagas of Icelanders, Norwegian sailors (often called Vikings), attempted to found two small colonies near the northernmost tip of Newfoundland, Canada, and a second site in southwestern Newfoundland. Archaeological sites centuries later place these early settlements and the attempted colony of Vinland on North American soil by Leif Erikson in 1003, more than 500 years ahead of Christopher Columbus making landfall in the New World in the much warmer climes of the Caribbean. And before they got to Canada, those Vikings first settled Greenland in the 980s.

City Council President Overstreet appoints incorrect number of members to committees
Immediately after being sworn into office, Atlanta City Council President Marci Collier Overstreet mistakenly appointed the incorrect number of members to council committees. On Jan. 5, Overstreet appointed eight members to both the Community Development/Human Services (CDHS) committee and Committee on Council. According to city code, standing committees can only have a maximum of seven members. This policy prevents ties within the committees and prevents a standing committee meeting from being legally recognized as a full council meeting, since eight members represents a majority of the 15 council members. …

Atlanta Streetcar will resume service on Feb. 3
MARTA has announced that the Atlanta Streetcar will resume service on Tuesday, Feb. 3, following the completion of underground utility repairs.  The Downtown streetcar was suspended in September to accommodate repairs by Georgia Power and align with scheduled infrastructure upgrades along the streetcar route. MARTA shuttle vans have continued providing service along the route. The work required a lane closure between Courtland Street and Peachtree Center Avenue, where Georgia Power has been excavating and repairing underground electrical lines. For safety reasons, streetcars cannot operate alongside open construction areas. MARTA said in a press release that it took advantage of the closure to complete catenary inspection and repair, track maintenance, tree trimming, station refurbishments, signage and vehicle updates, and deep cleaning along the route.
