He was in the US to promote a £250m fundraising campaign for @NSPCC but sloped off to Palm Beach in May 2000, apparently enjoying a $200 massage while there. Andrew regularly mixed taxpayer-funded and private travel, even though the Royal Household claimed it was discouraged.

In The Observer today, I’ve written a short piece about one revelation from the latest Epstein documents to be released: Prince Andrew flew to Florida to stay with the paedophile Jeffrey Epstein while on an official US visit to promote Britain’s leading child protection charity.

It’s interesting that Zelensky’s adviser is partly crediting the King with persuading Donald Trump to change tack on Ukraine. Some portray the royals as mere baubles tasked with charming foreign leaders but they are instruments of British foreign policy during state visits.

The King doesn’t make outspoken speeches like he used to do as Prince of Wales but, through the charities he created and still keeps in close touch with, he exercises influence. Many of his ideas, once controversial, have become part of the mainstream.

It’s complicated for the Windsors because they operate a family firm that is part of UK plc but, as with the Sussexes, it’s worth trying to put yourself in the King’s shoes and think, what would I do if my brother or sister did something that created so much public criticism?

When do you cut off a relative who has brought shame on your family? Fergie had been banished so many times before but then come back. Making sure Andrew and Fergie are hidden from the cameras at family gatherings might be a start.

Both sides seem baffled by reports suggesting anything other than a personal reconciliation. The question remains, however, why Prince Andrew was allowed to make money on the side for so long and why others, such as Prince Michael of Kent, were invited to official events.
