Sarah, Duchess of York sent a grovelling apology to Jeffrey Epstein because he claimed he would win big in a libel action, as his sexual interest in teenage girls did not make him a paedophile. He would almost certainly have lost but she feared the risk.

It’s interesting that Zelensky’s adviser is partly crediting the King with persuading Donald Trump to change tack on Ukraine. Some portray the royals as mere baubles tasked with charming foreign leaders but they are instruments of British foreign policy during state visits.

The King doesn’t make outspoken speeches like he used to do as Prince of Wales but, through the charities he created and still keeps in close touch with, he exercises influence. Many of his ideas, once controversial, have become part of the mainstream.

Both sides seem baffled by reports suggesting anything other than a personal reconciliation. The question remains, however, why Prince Andrew was allowed to make money on the side for so long and why others, such as Prince Michael of Kent, were invited to official events.
