Reflecting on the 1956 presidential election, my article notes Stevenson “clearly understood that his second run against Eisenhower was an extreme long shot."

Yet he still centered his campaign on issues others ignored.

That's a real winner.

The article shows how Eisenhower handled the 1956 presidential election while refusing to back Israeli aggression:

Israel and its two European allies backed off…” and he still won reelection.

In the context of the 1956 presidential election, Stevenson understood nuclear testing as an existential threat, saying “the earth’s atmosphere is contaminated from week to week by exploding hydrogen bombs.”

He ran a losing campaign that still mattered.

As Eisenhower navigated the 1956 presidential election, he insisted “Ben-Gurion should not make any grave mistakes…” and stood up to foreign military action without losing political support.

Here’s why that history matters now.

During the 1956 presidential election, Stevenson warned “there could be no real peace while more than half of our federal budget goes into an armaments race and the earth’s atmosphere is contaminated…”

We need that wisdom in modern politics.

Why not make it universally affordable?
