Tim, you are quite correct. There are strong positive arguments for a properly formatted and introduced digital ID, so why is the Labour Government suggesting a limited, negative system?

Having lived in countries with national IDs, I am a strong believer in the benefits for citizens of a properly introduced and coordinated system. #Starmer's poorly thought through and negative proposal of a limited ID system is not a sound policy. Labour needs to drop the policy, doesn't it?

We could easily and securely establish who we are so that our banking, insurance, and shopping would be easier and more secure. Other countries do it successfully, so why shouldn't we?

The benefits of digital ids are immense. Our medical records could be tied together so that we could receive treatment anywhere in the UK. Our pension and benefits records could be available to the employment and tax authorities so that we could check that we get the right payments.
