In general I'm in favour of reintroductions but do wonder, with white tailed eagle, whether it was such a good idea to release a species that predates and disturbs other vulnerable bird populations. The Somerset visitor even seems to have pushed out the regular ospreys from Chew.

Got a good look at the white tailed eagle at Chew Valley Lake today. Lots of greenshank; peregrine on the ground; marsh harrier flypast.

At Slimbridge. Wood sandpiper, c. 10 green sandpipers, 2 spoonbills, influx of yellow wagtails (mainly at middle point with cattle). Nice.

Severn Beach this morning. Quiet. One whimbrel plus another possible 4 distantly, one curlew, 30 oystercatcher, lots of whitethroat (but couldn't find lesser whitethroat), 1 reed warbler, lots of cetti's, 2 swallows. Kestrel and buzzard.

Circuit walk at Chepstow Park Wood again to see if spring would be productive. No wood warbler this time but tree pipit (short display flight), spotted flycatcher and siskin were nice year ticks. Lots of willow warbler too.

Gorgeous day at Slimbridge with 61 species inc. spoonbill (2), cattle egret (12ish), white fronted goose, early singing reed warbler (2), sand martin, swallow, etc.

Hallen Marsh late morning, first visit. No sign of glossy ibis but difficult with lack of cover and didn't want to flush it. Promising site though, swallows over, lapwing, little egret (5), cetti's and willow warbler, stonechat, kestrel, buzzard.

Severn Beach this morning. Flock of 19ish brent geese came up on shore with tide. Lots of meadow pipits, linnet and goldfinch on the move, a few sand martin and swallow, a couple of willow warblers in song. Marsh harrier over the river.

Morning walk around Blaise/Cherry Orchard this morning adding to the year list: treecreeper, nuthatch, mistle thrush, buzzard, goldcrest + great spotted woodpeckers drumming. No sign of firecrests. @bristolbirding.bsky.social

Heard a great spotted woodpecker singing the other morning. Didn't know they could. It sounded so strange that I recorded it for the Merlin app, which failed to identify it! A finch-like descending trill with the tonality of its usual chip call. #ukbirding #ukbirds

Portbury Wharf this afternoon. Added sparrowhawk, buzzard and marsh harrier (drifting in briefly over south pools). Common gull on north lake. Otherwise quiet.

Started the new year with 42 species at New Passage this morning inc little egret, black-tailed godwit, snipe, stonechat, kestrel and the usual crowds of curlew, wigeon, lapwing, redshank, dunlin, turnstone, small flock of greylag.

Good if chilly day at Slimbridge. 53 species inc Bewick's and one Whooper swan, spoonbill, great white egret, water rail, many many golden plover, avocet, snipe, and all the usual suspects.

On the other hand, just watched a sparrowhawk in the garden on a fresh woodpigeon kill (most of which it just left behind).
