![Earlier today I had a great chat with Rishi Lukka, P.Eng. PMP [who helped develop these systems when they worked at HDR/Arup], and I was suprised by a few details. So let's dive into the real problems & some quick fixes...it turns out Transit Signal Priority (TSP) is not a silver bullet, unless software grinches, operating speeds, and left-turn policies are also addressed:
1️⃣ Although conditional TSP already is in place, the trains rarely actually send a signal priority request! The control system only asks for priority when a train is “late” - but the current schedules are padded so heavily that the trains are almost never "late".
Fix: Make transit priority unconditional. A software change, not a construction project.
2️⃣ Even when signal priority is requested, the trains arrive too slowly to use it. TSP is triggered too far upstream based on higher design speeds. But the actual operating speeds are 10+ km/h slower, so the green extension expires before the train gets there!
Fix: Retune the signal timing to match real approach speeds - or better yet, let the trains operate at the speeds they were designed for.
3️⃣ A few left-turning cars move before a 100-passenger train. City policy prohibits phase rotation/skipping (like moving left turns after the LRT).
Fix: Allow conditional phase rotation. If the train is waiting, let it go first - then serve the cars. This is standard practice in many cities.
4️⃣ The trains run far below their designed operating speed.
The civil design supports speeds 30-40% higher than today’s operation. But operators rarely exceed 25 km/h through intersections, and station speeds are reduced in platform to ensure that a train under emergency braking never touches.
Fix: Adopt an LRT-appropriate operating profile: higher mid-block speeds, faster intersection clearance, and reasonable station entry speeds.
The good news?

🕵️ I went to the infamous #ParksideDrive 7X crime scene: there are numerous poles facing the speed camera where surveillance 📸 could be mounted - I know there was a deer cam in the woods before - but we need an actual camera, properly mounted in plain sight *with*barbed*wire* around it. #toPoli
