Wip Wednesday today is another part of Coup de Grace, aka the Haru Basement AU, which I am determined to get done and posted before the end of the year, in which Haru and Akechi have a little chat about why he's here

She steps down into the wine cellar and opens the door. When she does, she sees a smile spread across Akechi's face, so pleased to have been proven right. He’ll underestimate you, she reminds herself. He never thought you capable of this. He probably never spared you a second thought in his life. “Haru-san,” he greets, so satisfied it almost makes her hands curl into fists. “I’m sure you'll agree that this has gone far enough.” “No,” she answers primly. She refuses to sound defensive, or petulant. She is a master of controlling her tone, like he is - she sounds certain, matter-of-fact. “I don't agree.” “Is this some sort of hazing, for the newest member of your group?” he continues as if she hasn't spoken. “I didn't think the Phantom Thieves were juvenile enough to be cruel.” “I did this,” Haru states. “The others don’t know.” His smile curves larger and she realises that she's played into his hands. He was fishing for information, and she gave it without a second thought. Embarrassment burns, but she doesn't let it show on her face. “You are here until I'm sure that the thieves are safe,” she adds, determined to get the next word in before he can. “I'm not letting you go just because you ask nicely.” “Safe from what, exactly?” he counters. “Sae Niijima intends to arrest your entire group - frankly, I'm the only one who could possibly change her mind. How am I currently threatening you all?” We could say he stole the guard’s gun and committed suicide during his imprisonment… how about that? “Not all of us,” she admits, deciding she can play this card. “Ren-kun. You're threatening him.” “Ren-kun and I are friends,” he says. He lies to her in a slow, patient tone, like she's stupid. “In fact, I'm closer to Ren than I am to any of the others in the group. Why would I possibly threaten him?” Because you're a liar. Because you’re a nasty, selfish boy who can't bear kind, selfless people. Because you’ve been using him for your own reasons. “I don't know. But I won't let you do what you promised that man on the phone you would.” That makes his expression change. She watches the affability shutter, and something cold pass over his face. It's like summer to winter. It's like a new set of barriers came crashing down. Barbed wire, over the brick walls. “What man, Haru-san?”

My bff, who I met in high school and sat together with for 2 of said 5 years, also read this book and agreed that there are frightening similarities between a few of the characters and our actual classmates 👌🏻

My fav book would have to be The Secret of Dragonhome by John Peel, a classic! Joker had just enough time to brace his hands in front of him before Goro impacted with him, slamming them both into the far wall. "Oof!" Joker hissed, his head hitting against the wall with a loud crack. If Goro had been more aware of himself, he would have winced, but instead his body swelled with pleasure to hurt hurt hurt. "Crow! Hold on!" Joker gritted his teeth, arms keeping Goro at length. Goro's claws were inches from his face, trying their best to gouge out those beautiful features. One good swipe, and he could break that nose, rip a gash in his cheek that his doctor would have to spend ages stitching up. He could make Joker hurt, make him cry, make him bleed and- "Akechi. I'm sorry." Goro's body stilled, muscles braced but frozen. Through his mad haze, he could make out the despondent look on Joker's face. His eyes burnt with that same flame Goro was ever drawn to. Piercing straight through Goro's crazed state to pin him in place. He panted heavily, unable to move, to stop himself nor continue. "You're hurting, aren't you?" Joker said softly. “I didn't realise. You need to let out your frustrations, don't you?" “...” Goro pressed his lips into a line, willing his muscles to relax. The power was still humming through him, and he didn't feel nearly as satisfied. There were still reserves to burn, and given how uneasy he felt, and how long it had been since he could last let loose, he didn't like Joker's chances if he stuck around. He had to scare him off. Before he did something he would regret. "Fuck off!" Goro roared. Joker flinched, clearly not expecting the response so loud in his face "Akechi-" "Get out of here before I fucking kill you," Goro seethed..

My absolute favorite book HAS to be Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett-- it's a beautiful, touching exploration of mortality & morality, with a healthy dash of goofy absurdism. A very close tie has to be The Thirty Names Of Night by Zeyn Joukhadar: a vivid exploration of a Syrian trans man's quest to rediscover his mother's life story! As for my favorite genre, I adore fantasy of all kinds!! Fun fact: I've read 47 books so far this year, most of them from my local libraries :) Did you know they have yuri at the library now. Did you know th-- The guilt begins as a twinge in Akira’s hipbone, like something’s coiling around it and exploring the top of his femur. It snakes up through his innards and writhes hot-cold-hot up through his spinal cord. By the time he has eaten the leftover curry he’d stashed in the fridge for moments like these he could fly with the force of it tugging him upwards, saying look, look what you did, look what you did wrong. More importantly, though: he has to go to work. He mentally allots the extra hours between now and his shift for distractions, because if he has to be left alone with his thoughts for one more minute he’s going to scream. When he heads out to the living room he throws on his bag and jacket with more speed than strictly necessary. “I’m heading out,” he calls over his shoulder, but when Goro is silent he turns to look. Goro, still on the couch, looks at him sidelong. “I love you.” It feels like a promise; it feels like a threat. Goro has a habit of saving I love yous like they’re the last box of a beloved cookie flavor, doomed to go out of stock in a week: savored, hoarded, given only as a special gift. Akira feels like it means something that he’s pulled one out now, of all times. “I love you,” he replies, taking one from his own stock and crushing it between his teeth.
