Feeling extremely grateful to be a part of this inspiring team, contributing to what I believe to be the most important mission there is. The future could be very different, the suffering of sentient beings is very bad, and boy will we give it our best shot to reduce that suffering...
I found a nice survey. Summary: EAs think lots of different causes are important, AI safety is a big one (with the goal being to hopefully save lives), but so is fighting poverty and saving lives. :)

I found a nice survey. Summary: EAs think lots of different causes are important, AI safety is a big one (with the goal being to hopefully save lives), but so is fighting poverty and saving lives. :)

Very big chunks of the movement still prioritise fighting poverty and other present-day things eg animal welfare. Also, of the EAs who worry about extinction risks from AI, I get the sense that basically of them still care deeply about poverty :)

In fact, US foreign aid represents some of the most effective humanitarian intervention the world has ever seen. It's also great diplomacy.
Much of it was put in place by GOP presidents, such as Bush's PEPFAR program, which has saved more than 26M lives.

I agree with a lot of what I see from humanistsโฆ but Iโd love to see the wellbeing of all sentient beings (I.e. including non-human animals) considered and cared for. Caring about the wellbeing of everyone who can feel suffering and happiness feels kinder and less religion-y.

Iโd highly recommend The Master and His Emissary, given your interest in mind. Even just the first half (which focusses on the brain&consciousness). The audiobook can be quite dense at times, I enjoyed jumping about in the paperback. The author has been on lots of podcasts if youโd like a taste :)

5/n โฆ the whole โsmoke detectorโ analogy (and his explanation of exposure therapy). I think that bit has improved my mental health. I also liked the part where he discussed how and why different cultures might be happier than the US, and of course the huge segments on anxiety+depression.

4/n #179 Randy Nesse - the whole episode had a big impact on me (reframing my emotions as the outcome of evolutionary pressures - I had a lot of โahaโ moments for my own feelings and past experiences). So many good bits, but one that stuck with me personally was โฆ

2/n Jonathan Birch. I found the idea of someone being conscious and people believing and acting as if theyโre not extremely harrowing. Many egs throughout the podcast - I found the ones involving human patients particularly powerful, as I myself am a human. โฆ

..which usually gives me a nice dopamine boost and leads me to doing more than I would otherwise. And I also feel good (even though progress is so slow).
Conversely I find guilt to be the worst motivator and also obv so bad for my happiness!!

Probably teaching you to suck eggs, but Iโve found the old atomic habits process of being happy that Iโm just keeping up the habit rather than attaching the result to my happiness to be so useful. E.g. if I do just 2 minutes of editing per day Iโm pleased with myselfโฆ
