Been visiting the impressive experimental rock mechanics and petrology lab at LMU Munich this week!
Inspiring chats about modelling rock strength behind us, my talk on cryptic volcanic features on the #Moon and #Mars awaits today!

Multi-author (27!) review papers are the hardest to revise, especially this one we just resubmitted to @springernature.com J. Applied #Volcanology!
Stay tuned for our #volcano misconceptions if accepted 🙏🏼

On this day my family and I remember our time in #StateCollege @pennstateuniv.bsky.social back in 2020 with #Fulbright and #BAEF and all the great new friends and memories we left with!

Thanks!!!

Activity at Hayli Gubbi began in July when there was an eruption at Erte Ale. Magma propagated 30 km south passing under Hayli Gubbi. Since then, there has been a small plume, quasi-continuous SO2 emissions and uplift. Details in @uk-comet.bsky.social event response report: tinyurl.com/y3nfdfj8

Here's the GVP page of Hayli Gubbi in Ethiopia: volcano.si.edu/volcano.cfm?.... Plume from the eruption can be seen in this Aqua/MODIS image cross the Red Sea to the Arabian Peninsula. #eruption #volcano

Instead, consider @egu.eu or @europlanetmedia.bsky.social #EPSC, or @agu.org if you really, really need to attend in the US.

We have built a diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible community for years now. The work is far from finished. Politics will not take that from #academia.

I've never been, so I thought 2026 may be good to attend #LPSC in Texas.

By restricting academic freedom through abiding an executive order they have effectively lost their prime #Space #science meeting position.

This is not ok, you won't see me or my science there. I hope no one submits.
Choosing to go to LPSC now that they've doubled down on banning any content about making the field a better place for underrepresented scientists? That would be rewarding this behavior and make the field even more unsafe! Just a thought!

It's been an absolute pleasure to push initiatives, but the battle for our community's diversity goes on! I will retire from this role but will never stop fighting for those who feel excluded.

Our EDI webpage links to some good resources for all of us to do so 👇🏼

Working at a #Space #Science institution with governmental ánd industrial connections we live this tension every day.
We have to continue convincing that having science in the driver's seat of space exploration is prime.

Hard to imagine indeed! We're doing some work on Austurhorn now so yes, happy to have a chat, will dm 👍🏼
September 24, 2025 at 7:11 PM
I have trouble seeing how these felsic veins and dykes at Austurhorn #Icelqnd could have come in by pyroclastic processes and not flow of a fluid magma at 2-3km depth?
Any papers to suggest @fabianwadsworth.bsky.social @htuffen.bsky.social or others working on tuffisite veins et al?

...and then we went on to Reyðarártindur pluton, with it's roof contact showing hot interactions between granite and basalt in the roofs, even with a conduit and faults in the roof!
All described by Emma Rhodes et al in www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The second day the Tertiary Slaufrudalur pluton revealed itself magnificently (low ☁️ are regular here...), an example of a shallow granitic #magma pluton with roof contacts beautifully exposed for geologists ready to scramble upslope 🤩

The #LASI7 post-conf fieldtrip in SE #Iceland was a blast!
On day 1 Gudmundur Omar took us into the heart of #Geitafell, once a central #volcano.
We saw the gabbro intrusion that once sat at 2-3 km depth, and the most impressive sheet intrusion complex above that once fed #lava flows!
September 14, 2025 at 8:10 AM
And with that, the main conference of #LASI7 is over and disappears in our foggy rearview mirrors of time! It was an honor to host all of you VIPS in #Iceland!
See you in a few years in..?
