An extremely rough day for Edgewater in Chicago. ICE activity near schools. People kidnapped while working in yards, standing on hiring corners. So many rapid responders biking, walking, driving, whistles around necks, trying to protect their neighbors, but up against such well-funded forces.

Rapid responders in Chicago are amazing.

"Since September, at least six unhoused Chicagoans have been abducted by federal agents. That number is likely higher, but the social invisibility and isolation already faced by people experiencing homelessness make their disappearances harder to track" by @katieprout.bsky.social @mulchy.bsky.social
Make It Make Sense: ICE targets Chicago’s homeless community
Plus: state and local leaders crack down on anti-ICE protesters and advocates ask the chief judge to keep ICE out of county courthouses.

A certain legacy-media editorial board recommended capitulation in the face of Trump’s invasion, but on the South Side, we believe Chicagoans should keep standing up for one another.

Let us be clear: The President of the United States is levying war against American cities and American citizens—and we cannot rely on the other branches of government to save us.

It’s up to us.
It’s Up to Us to Protect One Another
As Trump sends troops to Chicago, we will continue to investigate and report. Readers have a role to play, too.

Seems worth noting that just the NEW annual funding for Trump's deportation machine is more than 10x the annual budget for the entire Environmental Protection Agency.

Even in a government shutdown, the 13th largest army in the world wages war in Chicago. ICE’s militarized raids & abductions are terrorizing communities—while billions are poured into their hands.

@sarahlazare.bsky.social & @lindsaykosh.bsky.social report:

A group of uniformed SWAT officers, wearing tactical gear and masks, stand alert on a street. Parked police vehicles and trees are visible behind them. A large crowd of protesters gather around a white van on a sunny day. People raise their fists and signs, including one reading “No Kings,” expressing defiance. A group of Illinois State Police officers, in uniform with protective gear and helmets, stand in formation holding batons, facing a crowd. The officers appear focused and tense, with sunlight casting strong shadows.

Yesterday I spoke to Brandon Lee from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee rights. He said they are still trying to get in touch with people who were taken. “This is very much a case of DHS deliberately trying to disappear people. Why else would they do it in the middle of the night?”

NEW: If the U.S. immigration enforcement apparatus were its own national military, it would be the 13th most heavily funded in the world. This bloated force is raining violence on Chicago.

There is a class component to federal agents' crackdowns. They're abducting day laborers, street vendors, domestic workers, textile workers en masse. They're not going after big employers/people in Trump's corporate milieu.
How ICE Terror Campaigns Are Used to Discipline Labor
While Chicago sees a surge of ICE detentions, workers are facing retaliation as immigrants when they advocate for their rights.

@stephensemler.bsky.social was sounding the alarm back in July. Always read his work. He follows this stuff in granular detail and brings a really sharp analysis. www.stephensemler.com/p/ice-budget...

One thing to understand about what's happening now is that on Oct 1, the deportation machine's budget increased dramatically: $170 billion in NEW funding, averaging to $42.5 billion per year. That's just below the Israeli military's annual budget. It's the equivalent of 13th biggest army on earth.

The surge in federal violence has been met with an outpouring of organizing in Chicagoland, where rapid response networks have been equipping communities with knowledge and skills to help protect residents. That organizers are up against such a huge force underscores how brave they are.

If Trump's deportation machine were an army, it would be the 13th largest on earth, ahead of Poland, Canada, Iran. The funding increase kicked in Oct 1, as federal agents unleash violence on the Chicago area, raiding communities and brutalizing protesters. By me & Lindsay Koshgarian, 📷 Steel Brooks.

This is how federal agents are showing up to protests against ICE. This is from Friday am, on 25th around the corner from the Broadview detention center. Looks like an invading army.

A note of caution to journalists: Don’t report ICE claims as fact. They lie all the time. And they have a huge propaganda apparatus to spread their lies. Don’t be part of it.
sarahlazare.bsky.social
When you help ICE violently repress protesters, you enable them to do what they did in Chicago today: detain an alder trying to protect someone in a hospital, teargas a 2 year old in Logan Square, kidnap people from the street, terrorize workers and kids and neighbors just trying to live their lives
sarahlazare.bsky.social
Pritzker told us to take out our phones and record ICE. But what do we do when it’s his own state police force brutalizing protesters, pinning them in so that federal agents can beat them? Illinois state police were standing shoulder to shoulder with ICE at Broadview today.
