While ICE abductions, often in broad daylight, have provoked fear and outrage, the escalation is also unleashing a less visible form of economic treachery on Chicago’s immigrant working class: wage theft, lost income, work speedups, and economic slumps that spread through neighborhoods. My latest.

I wrote about the visible and invisible ways ICE terrorizes workers. Day laborers are abducted looking for work. House cleaners are missing wages because they're afraid to leave the house. A poultry worker faces a heavier workload because people aren't coming to work. Employers are stealing wages.

It's incredibly important not to let philanthropic trends in funding dictate which issues we care about, not least because this lets the rich set the agenda. Whether or not climate change reporting is the trendy thing to fund these days, it's existential, and there is not enough scrutiny on COP30.

At COP30, humanity must choose: Fossil fuel industry profits or a livable planet?
“The presence of lobbyists and other representatives from the fossil fuel industry… is a huge problem, obviously, for the COP process,” Dharna Noor says. “The idea that these companies that have their...

I wrote a book about US media’s complicity in the Gaza genocide. It's available for pre-order. It’s a data-driven and, I hope, thorough account of how center-left media sold the American public on mass death in Gaza.

Moments ago: tenants of the South Shore apartment building that federal immigration agents raided at the end of September held a presser to announce they're forming a tenants union.

They're demanding, among other things, sewage removal and heat and electricity restroration.

I know there have been a lot of criticisms of Home Depot for allowing federal agents to use their property to detain day laborers and stage raids. I was going through the 990 for the Home Depot Foundation, and they give directly to a foundation that does private-public partnerships with DHS and FBI.
