Earlier we were treated to a fantastic @healthhumslboro.bsky.social talk by @saralread.bsky.social where she discussed her novels ‘The Gossips’ Choice' (2020) & 'The Midwife’s Truth' (2023), and how case notes and midwifery practices in historical medical treatises are transformed into fiction.

Wonderful afternoon yesterday celebrating another PhD success as Rai passed her viva. Her creative critical thesis has been a pleasure to supervise for Catie Gill and me over the last 3 years. @lborouniversity.bsky.social

Last evening we said goodbye to two phenomenal colleagues in Loughborough English. Deirdre O'Byrne and Catie Gill have been teaching in our department for over 20 years and next week will leave us for pastures new. The department will feel very strange next term without their presence.

Six years ago @historianjen.bsky.social and I went to the very cold 1620s house in Leicestershire to make mince pies with cow's tongues from a historical recipe. See how we got on here: www.lboro.ac.uk/media-centre...
A collage of photos from this day in 2018 featuring two women making mince pies in a historical setting.

There's lots of buzz about scientists on #bluesky! Don't forget to make room for the medical and science historians, too! Here's my #starterpack of some awesome people (and institutes). From medieval astrolabes to Victorian corsets, radium soap, and beyond! I got you covered.

A colourised version of the engraving 'A lady telling a gripping story to young women and children' by John Opie. Credit: Wellcome Collection. The image shows a group of five women, huddled together and deep in concentration. A woman on the right is the focus of attention: she has raised her arm to command attention as she tells the gripping story.
