☀️ New research highlights gaps in sun safety: 75% tan for appearance, 50% used beds, 40% believe in base tans.
UV risk is rising ... so is misinformation.
📢 Let's push for evidence-based advocacy 👉 pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39272952/
UV Safety Awareness Month.
We’re in the heart of summer and even with fall coming, it’s never too late to start protecting your skin. Sun safety is a year-round habit, not just a seasonal one. UV AWARENESS RESEARCH.
Skin Cancer Awareness and Sun Safety in Manitoba.
A new study in Manitoba looked at how people in the province spend time in the sun and how they protect their skin.
Researchers used survey data from more than 3,000 participants in the Manitoba Tomorrow Project to better understand sun habits, beliefs about tanning, and how people try to stay safe from the sun.
The study aimed to:
Learn how often people are exposed to the sun and whether they protect themselves, such as by using sunscreen or wearing hats.
Understand what people in Manitoba believe about tanning and whether they know the risks.
Find out how sun safety habits differ by age, gender, education level, income, and skin tone.
Use this information to create public health campaigns that teach people how to protect their skin and lower their risk of skin cancer.
Lagacé et al., 2024. More than 75% of people said they had tanned recently just to look good. This shows that many people care more about their appearance than the health risks, even though skin cancer is becoming more common.
More than half of the people in the study said they had used a tanning bed before. Even though tanning beds are known to cause cancer, many people continue to use them.
Over 40% believe that getting a base tan helps protect their skin from future sunburns. But this isn’t true. A base tan means the skin is already damaged and doesn’t offer much protection. It can actually raise the risk of skin cancer.
Lagacé et al., 2024. WANT TO BE MORE SUN SAFE?
Stay cool, drink water, and avoid dehydration.
Wear light layers, wide-brim hats, and shades to block harmful UV rays.
Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) every two hours.
Advocate for more accessible, affordable, and community-wide sun protection
Lagacé et al., 2024.
