Why Do the Soo Locks Close for the Season? 🤔

1/ Every year around January 15, the Soo Locks close for the season, and it’s not just because of winter.

We are speeding right along on the road to the 57th running of the I-500 Snowmobile Race in Sault Ste. Marie on Sat., Feb. 7th. Work is currently ongoing to put sides up on the Trailhead Pavilion and the tireless volunteers behind the I-500 race itself are getting the track prepared.

Fun fact: The Paul R. Tregurtha is the biggest ship on the Great Lakes at over 1,013 feet, and a frequent Soo Locks visitor.

The Soo Locks close on January 15 for winter maintenance! That means there are still 10 days left to catch your favorite freighters passing by Sault Ste. Marie. The Locks re-open at midnight on March 25 for the 2026 navigation season.

Have you been to Jose’s Mexican Restaurant in the Soo yet? You have to stop in and try some of their great menu items. We highly recommend their Burrito L.P., it's delicious!

This ship is a true international traveler. The FWN Atlantide sails between Europe, Canada, and the Great Lakes, entering through the St. Lawrence Seaway and passing through the Soo Locks as part of its global trade route.
