Wildcat conservation and recovery in Scotland 🐾

Working with communities to bring the Highland tiger back from the brink of extinction 🧡
Haring around 🐇

Data from the GPS-radio collars has highlighted that wildcats released this year are caching and feeding on hare carrion.

GPS points clustering on a carcass gives the team the unique ability to locate the site, and record behaviour by installing trail cameras 📸

Wildcat or not? That is the question 🤔

Dr Roo Campbell, @naturescot.bsky.social's Mammal Advisor, has written an enlightening blog about the challenges around visually identifying a potential wildcat from a domestic tabby cat, and the guidance that is available to everyone ⬇️

"At the heart of our club's crest" ⛳️

We are incredibly grateful to Royal Dornoch Golf Club, whose club crest is a wildcat, for their ongoing support for wildcat restoration in Scotland.

In recognition of their generosity, one of the kittens born this year has been named Dornoch ⬇️

The kittens in the conservation breeding for release centre have recently been health-checked by the keeper team 🩺

The feisty four were also vaccinated, microchipped, wormed, and sexed as three boys and a girl 🐾

When you're a warm weather kinda wildcat 😾

Winter has arrived, and some of the wildcats in the conservation breeding for release centre, based at @highlandwpark.bsky.social, don't look too happy about it.

Thankfully, their dense fur and bushy tails will keep them cosy in the snow 🧡

Earlier this month, the team were delighted to support the match balls for the Newtonmore Camanachd Club's under 17s shinty final 🏑

The Highland town of Newtonmore has a strong cultural connection to shinty and wildcats, and we’re proud to part of this community 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Your sightings are saving wildcats 👀

Is an unfamiliar cat appearing in your garden? Or perhaps you've spotted field voles or rabbits near your veg patch? 🐰

@naturescot.bsky.social's Dr Roo Campbell explains how recording your sightings is crucial for wildcat conservation ⬇️

Wildcat markings continue to change during their first year of life, and even an adult’s coat may vary seasonally.

That said, consistent traits have allowed the team to identify a dispersed wild-born kitten from earlier this year on the cameras 📸

Can you see the similarities? 🔍

We recently joined @catsprotection.bsky.social as they showcased their new Cats Manifesto Scotland to MSPs and animal welfare stakeholders.

The publication calls for stronger political support to improve cat welfare, inc. mandatory microchipping, which would support wildcats in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Callie got papped (again) 😸

Forestry and Land Scotland's Maree Morrison spotted wildcat Callie, who has become somewhat of a local celebrity. Maree managed to get this beautiful photo before she darted away.

Wildcats are typically elusive, but if you are lucky enough to see one ⬇️

"I know I left my kitten here somewhere." 👀

A wildcat's striped coat allows them to blend in amongst vegetation. This can aid adults when hunting prey and hide kittens from potential predators.

Unfortunately for Margaret, her kitten's disguise was working a little too well! 🐾

Purr-anormal Cativity 👻 (Too much?)

In the theme of Halloween, we thought we'd share a few skeletal snaps of the wildcats, including @highlandwpark.bsky.social's female, Fian, and one of the sponsors' wildcats, Oscar.

See if you can spot their microchips 🩻

Breeding for success🧡

Since 2015, The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, Saving Wildcats' lead partner, has managed the UK's captive wildcat population to support the recovery of their species in the wild.

In that time, over 200 kittens have born within the conservation breeding programme ⬇️

When a scary noise suddenly leaves you all alone... 💀

Wildcats are typically crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dusk and dawn.

They also move about at night, like this female and her kittens, when they are less likely to be seen and prey, such as mice, are active 🌙

Monday? For this wildcat it's still SUNday 🌞

This released female is clearly enjoying one of those rare occasions where the kids are occupying themselves for five minutes... 🧡
