The cloud forest is a living tapestry of biodiversity, where form, color, and pattern seem to compete in endless creativity. Can anyone identify the following patterns? What organisms are these?

Biodiversity is spectacularly beautiful. It is also vital for our planet. In the cloud forest, orchids and other epiphytes make up 25% of the biomass. They perform an essential function: they capture and filter water, regulating the water cycle.

Let's safeguard species diversity. We depend on it.
A bedsheet. 🛏️ A UV light. 💡Some late night coffee. ☕

What are these ingredients for? A night of mothing.

Learn more about how these things come together on our blog, where we are writing about the different ways we are documenting the biodiversity of the Chontayacu Reserve.

Mothing is a form of wildlife observation where enthusiasts observe and study moths, similar to birdwatching.

The tiger cat has been on a scientific journey. In 2013, Oncilla was divided into two species. Last year, scientists found that there was a third species, the clouded tiger cat.

This video shows a clouded tiger cat. Look closely: it is also melanistic. They are very rare, and it's an exciting find!
Reforestation is a labor of love and patience. Victor Manitio's method involves weeks of ditch-digging, invasive grass removal, plant selection at forest trails, and careful plant care. It takes time and commitment, but seeing the forest regrow is worth it.

Keep up the great work, Victor!
Cougars are the most widely distributed animal in the Western hemisphere. This individual passed by our camera three minutes before we checked it. It looks back at us before dashing away.

This & other camera trapping is one of Savia's specialties.

Hey there! 🌿 Did you know there are over 2,500 species of orchids found in cloud forests around the world? 🌸 They thrive in the cool, misty environment and add a pop of color to the scene. Here are a few species we found in our Chontayacu reserve

Dodsonflies have large mandibles that resemble tusks. They are used for defense and mating. They are primarily nocturnal, do not feed and live for only a few days after emerging from their pupal stage.

This adult male was photographed in our Chontayacu cloud forest reserve in Ecuador!
Our cloud forest reserve protects endangered species like the Black-and-Chestnut Eagle.
There's only an estimated 1,400 to 4,000 left in the wild.

And yet, a pair raises offspring in Chontayacu every year.

Let's preserve their habitat. 🦅🌿

Our camera trap caught a glimpse of the endangered mountain tapir 📸

Ensuring this keystone species' protection is vital for maintaining the biodiversity of the Andes 🌿.

Let's work together to save the cloud forest!

Quiz time: which of these statements is true?

Nature is:
🌱 A complex web of species
🌱 Our planet's motor
🌱 Central to economies and cultures
🌱 A source of inspiration

Answer: All of the above.

Now more than ever, the planet needs our help. Everyone can make a difference.

Happy Earth Day!
Camera trapping is a great tool for conservation 📸🌿.

It helps us monitor wildlife 🦁🐘, study behaviors 🧐, and protect endangered species 🦏.

Let's work together to protect our planet!

Meet Victor Manitio. In 2018, he began reforesting his 13 hectare plot. 🌳 Now, it's a thriving forest where 270+ bird species have been seen. 🦜

Victor's project inspired us to start the Chontayacu reserve.

We are reforesting part of our cloud forest reserve. 🌳🌿

By planting trees in this unique ecosystem, we are restoring the natural habitat, fighting climate change and preserving biodiversity. 🌎💚

Let's keep working towards a greener future!

Happy #InternationalDayofForests!

In cloud forests, epiphytes– like orchids or bromeliads– capture and filter up to 50% of water, adding nutrients in the process.

Saving forests protects water and maintains climate patterns. The life in these forests keeps our planet healthy.
Happy world frog day!

The Siren glass frog 🐸 has been found in our cloud forest reserve.

This species is classified as endangered by the IUCN Red List. 🔴

Let's work together to protect their habitat and ensure their survival for future generations!

One threat to Chontayacu's forest is deforestation by cow farmers. 🐄
They cut trees & plant grasses that crowd out other plants. Cows' hooves water-log the soil.
The result? A muddy mess that takes decades to regrow.

This is deforestation. Help us stop it. ⤵️

The Cock-of-the-Rock is an iconic bird of the Andes. ⛰️

There are 7+ leks- trees where males gather to woo females- in and around the reserve.

Check out the racket they make. When you're good-looking, you don't have to be a good singer.📢⤵
